RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

WDF!! Why?? Is it THAT Important?? (Prepping For College)

Okay, I'm sorry about the Subject head but, my teacher, classmates and I had a conversation on College. now even though we never REALLY got into the the whole college discussion we had discussed "ways to get into a good college" and "what's the right things to put on a Resume" Now when i first heard that i was like okay, so were gonna get into College Prep, I'm okay with that. THEN my teacher started to get into how we need to do Community Service, and Join Clubs and stuff. and THAT pissed me off. I mean I'm getting a job (because the "mighty single mom with boyfriend i barely know has spoken" aka my mom) and then my teacher says that i MUST join a club/clubs if i want to get into a good college. i mean wdf?? does my Resume have to be like 12 Paragraphs in 4 font (as they recommend 1 page Resumes) or something. i KNOW for a fact that i can't handle THAT much planning. With my Parents trying to "change" me (or get me to adapt to a stressful lifestyle) and get a after school Job and the fact that you have to join a club.....2 CLUBS!!! actually. a random club and Community Service Club, and be able to manage school and all the annoyances that come along with school. WOOOOOW.

And the School work isn't the hard part too. the thing I.M.O that makes school hard are the people you interact with. So to be able to go to work all happy with the "can i take your order with a smile!!" impossible for me (work at a restaurant) Just why does all this matter. but the idiots can play 1 sport and BAM their in a Ivy League school?? i mean i played football one year and plan to play tennis but is that really fair?? Well Junior Year here i come. and when it comes all hell will break loose in my life. Because APPARENTLY you CANNOT do this Senior Year, as Colleges will know that you tried to cram all it in at the last minute. I mean its bad enough they look at your Facebook, but now they reject you if just decide that Senior Year, when you have no 7th or 8th Period (unless you plan on taking Pre-Calculus like me) that you just crammed all the extracurricular activities in then?? ah well. that's the Educational System for you. I better find a way to manage my Schedule. also the fact that i am part "Hikikomori" doesn't help.....AT ALL!!!

so tell me what do you think. and as for all the members in College Now. Was it all Worth it?? Did you do the whole Extracurricular Activities = Success thing?? THANKS FOR READING AND HAVE A NICE DAY.

I didn't waste my time with that bullshit but I know people who did and its not worth it unless your going to one of those super ass expensive rich colleges that don't matter much anymore anyway(the only reason people go into harvard or yale is that they are in the same schools with alot of rich families and have a chance of going into business with them but don't count on it).

Re: WDF!! Why?? Is it THAT Important?? (Prepping For College)

I disagree with both of you. while they are not NEEDED they are very helpful for getting into colleges

"BUT WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY CARE, THIS IS BULLSHIT" you might ask?
well, sorry for the news flash, but a College does not want a bunch of shut in anti-social pricks who camp out in their dorms all day. Students like that make the school look like a boring place, and when a school looks boring it loses business. Your application to a college is the "why you should let me pay you to make you look good" sheet. If you are invovled with sports, clubs, arts, and ESPECIALLY VOLUNTEER WORK (because they want nice, selfless people) will show them that you are a social and outgoing person, which is exactly what they want. with enough extra curriculars, you can get in just about anywhere.

Think of it like this... If you look like an anti social person who will drag down the "college atmosphere" on your application, you better have damn good grades. they dont want people sitting in their dorms all day, unless its for studying. and the best way for them to judge if you will do that is to get some extra curriculars going.

But having a job looks good on the application too, so dont freak out. but colleges want fun happy outgoing people, not a bunch of shut ins who make their college boring as hell.

Jesus I like you man but most of this is complete horseshit.
Fine your right on some of this as just like jobs on your resume and just like anything else it makes you look good but its not required.
In society everyone possesses Sociopathic tendencies and any person who isn't an idiot can sit there and lie for a bit to get accepted into a college and not be antisocial(I pull this shit off all the time with people).
Jesus you strike me as preppy.

Re: WDF!! Why?? Is it THAT Important?? (Prepping For College)

I'll have all of my graduation requirements completed by the end of this school year, so next year I'll have extra time to do community service and be part of clubs.

I'm not going to let anything get in the way of me getting into MIT.

Re: WDF!! Why?? Is it THAT Important?? (Prepping For College)

Don't pile on a bunch of activities if you're not interested. It's not worth it.

Colleges do want you to do activities, but ones you're interested in. You have a job because you need it. Joining one other club won't kill you, provided it's one you like. But you don't have to pretend to be an overachiever to get into college. Seriously, universities are there for business: they want reasonably good students, but at the end of the day, it's the amount of money you give them that matters.

I never said it was required, I said it helps. Im not saying you need to be social to get into college. im saying they like that, and thats why his teacher wants those things. thats why the colleges leave a massive space for you to list extra curriculars in the applications.

This.

Also community colleges are open enrollment. They literally do not give a fuck about your grades or extracurriculars. So long as you have a pulse and a diploma, you can attend college.

And that's unfortunate, because the kind of people who were "shut in anti-social pricks" in high school are often some of the most interesting people once they get to college.

A diploma from MIT would pretty much mean I'll never have to worry about money ever again.

Well, its nice to know that money can substitute for actual knowledge.

Hidden stuff:
TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

^ This verily.

College was useless to me, well, the course was useless... but the awesome people I met while there was worth every single cent my parents paid. XD

But then I'm not in America. I have no direct experience with that, but have read multiple times that college is highly overrated there too.
