RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I'm back
I'm back (again). I'll try not to be sanctimonious smart-ass this time around.
Also, in an interesting turn of events, I'm going to be a teacher.
I've never let my school interfere with my education.

RE: I'm back
A lot of us SS-goers seem to want to become teachers. Funny, that.

RE: I'm back
I plan on going to Japan and teaching English. I just finished a college diploma in computer technology but a few months ago I realized that technology is not the career I'm interested in. I seem to have an innate skill concerning technology and computers but I don't get any satisfaction working in that field. What I've found is that I really like to teach. I have taught some of my friends (who happen to be Japanese) English and they said I was pretty good. If you combine that with my interest in Japanese culture and history, I figure it's as good a reason as any to be an English teacher in Japan.

Instead of "sanctimonious smart-ass" I should said "dumbass". I have no regret for the ideas and opinions I have promoted but I do sincerely regret how I have treated some of the people who frequented this forum. Oldfags may know what I am talking about.

Probably a misguided attempt at changing the system from within. The public education system, no matter what country it is in, is an affront to the rights and freedom of children and teenagers. While I refuse to do anything that will further harm students, I do not think there is any chance at reforming the public school system.

fine change it to still growing both mentally and physically.
Most adults act stupider than kids anyway.

I don't think they did it on purpose, but everybody thought it was you anyways. Meh, that member was only around for a few weeks IIRC.

I lurked this site starting in 2004 and started posting in 2006. I had admin powers and over 9000 posts. Then I had a teenage breakdown, left SS, and told Soul to delete my account. Came back in 2009 and made some posts with this account then stopped posting again. And here I am.
I don't think I'm going to suddenly disappear this time. I owe a lot to this forum and I'm going to have a lot of things to ask and talk about when I start teaching. school-survival.jp anyone?
I've never let my school interfere with my education.

RE: I'm back
Since you're so Japanesey and whatnot, I just ordered Essays in Idleness by Kenko and I was wondering if you've read it and, if so, is it any good? I read an article about it and bought it with a gift card.

RE: I'm back
Never heard of it. I've only read two medieval Japanese books: the Life-Giving Sword by Yagyu Munenori (the swordsman) and the Unfettered Mind by Takuan Sōhō (the monk). I bought them both at the same time because Takuan's book was written as, in modern language, an open letter to Yagyu. I like both of them but the Unfettered Mind is better.
I've never let my school interfere with my education.

Beginner but not super noob. I can read hiragana and katakana phonetically but I can only understand it if it's pretty simple.

I'm not interested in Japanese language, but I am interested in trying to understand different philosophies. That's why I wanted to read the book. I don't know why, but Eastern philosophies have always struck me as a bit circular in thinking, and sometimes completely incomprehensible.
