RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Student banned from prom because of toy gun

Quote:CENTER, TX (KSLA) -

An East Texas student was told he could not attend prom because of an incident involving a drama department prop.

Center High School juniors and seniors will go to prom Saturday night, but Center High School Student Avery Tindol will not be among them because of an incident involving a toy gun.

Tindol says he and other students were cleaning out the drama room's prop closet when he was handed a toy gun before the bell rang dismissing class. "I realized I had it in my pocket and as soon as a did I took it out to give it to the guy that gave it to me, and a teacher ran up and grabbed my arm," says Tindol.

The Center, Texas school board told Tindol that he would not be allowed to go to prom because of what happened in October. Tindol was suspended for three days while administration investigated. Tindol's name was cleared following the investigation.

But a rule in the high school's handbook says after suspensions, administrators can decide what school activities a student can participate in. "I was shocked, I figured they would be on my side," says Tindol.

Center school administrators say they cannot comment on the disciplinary actions against Tindol.

Meh...prom's a waste of time anyway.

This. If you have a significant other, why don't you do something other than prom? Go to a party, do something alone together, make your own party and invite everyone..
Prom is stupid IMO. There's a ton of better things you can do with your date besides prom.

The "incident" itself is really stupid though, did they even look to see if it was a prop or not or just say "OMG GUN SUSPENSION NAO"

Of course they "can't comment". Not because it is an actual rule but because then they would have to justify their god damn stupidity.

She grabbed his arm lol
As if that would have even came close to stopping him if his plan was to shoot up the school.

Because we all needed this combination of distraction and paranoia.
Prom is just a way for the school to make money on hype and pay off their eternal debt to Josten's or whatever company does the photo packs.

I've seen so much shit done to youth and for some reason, this has made me angrier than I've felt in years. Abuse and oppression happens all over the world. It's a terrible reality of modern society, but we've all accepted that it happens and we're doing what we can to fight it and build a better world.
But this...this mindless, condescending disrespect toward people who have no legal voice with which to defend themselves, this reduction of parents' betrayal into a cheap crack about kids being computer-savvy...it's like watching a surgeon joke about life insurance while his patient bleeds to death on the operating table. The media's job is to protect society from oppression and they've drawn a clear line between the people worth protecting and the people that don't matter. How can they people sleep at night?

RE: Student banned from prom because of toy gun

Yeah but then soccer moms and PTA's with nothing better to do got in a huge fuss about guns, then schools across the nation adopted what's known as a "zero tolerance policy" and once that happens common sense flys out the window. There have been cases of kindergartners being expelled for having a butter knife. I remember one from a few years back, in my own town for Christ sake. Good student, set for college in some Ivy League school, Eagle Scout, loved the outdoors, He forgot he had a fillet knife sitting on the dash of his truck form when he went camping over the weekend. Some admin saw it and decided it must have been the next Columbine. He wasn't able to graduate.
The district has since changed it's zero tolerance regarding weapons after a lawsuit, you can only be expelled for shit like combat knives or real guns. Pissy shit like a fillet knife or a toy gun would probably only get you a couple days suspension.

lol happened to me at middle school
THAT BLUNT BUTTER KNIFE IS A WEAPON

well you might as well remove my fists/hands, legs, and brain, since they're better weapons than a blunt butter knife, after all

That teacher must be paranoid and very scared, or just gets a kick out of hassling people. It's so easy to say, 'You know, you might get in trouble with that thing because the rules are so crazy. Could you let me have it?' 99.9999% of the time- problem solved. Not that there ever really was a problem to begin with- but just to keep the kid from having to go through all this.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Columbine and V-Tech tells me that unarmed citizens need to arm themselves to defend themselves. These high score pussies would probably have never thought of trying to shoot up people at a gun show.
