RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Nine Dangerous Things You Were Taught In School
http://www.forbes.com/sites/jessicahagy/...in-school/
Published on Forbes.com... that's a pretty well-respected site, isn't it?
Check original for pics and stuff.
Quote:Be aware of the insidious and unspoken lessons you learned as a child. To thrive in the world outside the classroom, you’re going to have to unlearn them.
Dangerous things you were taught in school:
1. The people in charge have all the answers.
That’s why they are so wealthy and happy and healthy and powerful—ask any teacher.
2. Learning ends when you leave the classroom.
Your fort building, trail forging, frog catching, friend making, game playing, and drawing won’t earn you any extra credit. Just watch TV.
3. The best and brightest follow the rules.
You will be rewarded for your subordination, just not as much as your superiors, who, of course, have their own rules.
4. What the books say is always true.
Now go read your creationism chapter. There will be a test.
5. There is a very clear, single path to success.
It’s called college. Everyone can join the top 1% if they do well enough in school and ignore the basic math problem inherent in that idea.
6. Behaving yourself is as important as getting good marks.
Whistle-blowing, questioning the status quo, and thinking your own thoughts are no-nos. Be quiet and get back on the assembly line.
7. Standardized tests measure your value.
By value, I’m talking about future earning potential, not anything else that might have other kinds of value.
8. Days off are always more fun than sitting in the classroom.
You are trained from a young age to base your life around dribbles of allocated vacation. Be grateful for them.
9. The purpose of your education is your future career.
And so you will be taught to be a good worker. You have to teach yourself how to be something more.

This.
"There's no 'I' in 'Team'." Yeah, but there is a "me" in "Team" spelled backwards!

RE: Nine Dangerous Things You Were Taught In School
I agree with eight and nine. It's like how my mom said once, when she was confused why I spent so much time at home trying to understand math class in a number sense, and I asked her how I would ever understand it any way else. She said it's only there to get credit for or to use in a job.
That's one thing to learn, though. It only matters if it makes you money.

I agree, no wonder people today are how they are... brainwashed subordinate puppets of those in power
Did you ever wonder, how time works?

RE: Nine Dangerous Things You Were Taught In School
If college is so important, why not just go sooner?
A friend of mine started college when she was 11. She's gonna keep going till she's 18, which is about a year from now, and she's gonna have like 3 different majors completed, with an honors degree.
She was lucky of course, because she was being homeschooled, and her dad was a professor, so her parents were just like, hey, why not just take college classes now? So she did them as dual credit, not that it really matters when you're homeschooled.
I think my friend is of pretty average intelligence. She's not a genius. Anyone can do what she's doing, given the opportunity. The problem is that a lot of universities have an age minimum. She was lucky that the college she lived near didn't have any rules like that.
If you're planning on going to college, you should do it right now. Community college is best, since it's usually cheaper.

Zoidberg: What is it, already? What's the cause of your anger?
Leela: I guess I would have to say, I hate you!

Holy shit, I love this. So true.
Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."
