RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

"Books are boring because they have no pictures in them."

One of my friends told me that he only reads mangas because they have pictures in them. Regular novels and books are boring because they have no pictures in them.

When I told him that "what did he expect out of novels", he told me to shut the hell up.

The shit that comes out his mouth.... the same kid who hate how some people looks and expects them to get plastic surgery. The shit that comes out his mouth...

I hate people like that. "Lol it doesn't have interactive popups and games so it must be boring lollllzzzz"

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

I tell ya schools are working fine(a few more generations and people won't even be able to read or write anymore just like the dark ages).
Idiocracy here we come.

It's because school's force kids to read, and no one likes doing things they are forced to do.

If he had any amount of creativity or imagination, he wouldn't need pictures in books; you can usually visualize it in your head, & that's one of the best parts about reading.

If he doesn't like books without pictures, then he can just not read them. What's the big deal?

RE: "Books are boring because they have no pictures in them."

Picture books are very important for young children. It takes skill and a clear message to transcribe a whole concept into pictures, and skill to understand it.
I hate the movies, but really. Like when I draw a face and it never quite displays as planned, but it's all the more clear that way and it corresponds like a puzzle piece to the story. Some stories, I agree, there has to be the thing of more than one way of picturing it, or picturing it personally, or whatever. But for some, the picture forms it as all the more real and enduring and conveys the idea better--especially if it starts out as a picture.
I don't know. I mean, would you like to learn chemistry without pictures and diagrams? Math? I don't believe it's so far away from understanding other symbols, like languages. I know you are speaking of novels, but I mean overall. Overall, it's just that way sometimes with no image.
But for the other half of it(most of novels), I agree with you. Just, I wouldn't have something to say if I had students who wanted to look at a picture and not read.
The things he said about people sound stupid.
