RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Debate on Omegle

On Omegle.

You: hey

Stranger: hello

Stranger: M..f?

You: M

Stranger:Where do you live?

You: United states

Stranger: I live there too. East or west?

You: East?

Stranger: Ok.

You: Doing anything?

Stranger: No. You?

You: Doing this stupid math homework that I don't understan

You: Understand*

Stranger: Oh. But math is easy.

You: Easy how?

Stranger: Once you get all the formulas down, it's a snap.

You: Well for me, math is frustrating because of the "jumps" it makes when it goes over something easy then "jumps" on to something hard with no explantion as to how or why they did it.

You: Explanation*

Stranger: So why don't you ask a teacher if its hard.

You: Sometimes I do and sometimes I get it, but most of the times, I get even more confused.

Stranger: Well you do get some of it. Once you start getting it, you start seeing its purpose.

You: Just because I get it doesn't necessarily mean I need it. I understand the history of the civil war but do I necessarily need it as a writer? No. Honestly I can't see the reason for me learning this stuff.

Stranger: well math is very important. You need it a lot of things. I can't believe you said that. You're gonna need math in at least something.

You: Yeah, I'm not denying that. But I only need math that pertians to my field of study. There's no need to study and understand all of geometry if all I want is the area of circle for one of my stories.

You: Pertains*

Stranger:That's crap. To understand the area of a circle, you would have to learn all of geometry to get a handle on it.

You: No you don't

Stranger: Yes.

You: No.

Stranger: Example?

You: I just gave you one abov.

You: above*

Stranger: A writer?

You: yea.

Stranger: Like interests of that type matter in real life.

You: Your interests decide your fate. I'm not going into a field for nursing if I don't like nursing.

Stranger: Are you gonna find a job as writer that pays the bills? Seriously?

You: Perhaps. I can't doubt myself.

Stranger: That srsly pays the bills though?

You: If I have to get a scond job, I will. And writing isn't all that I want to do.

You: Second*

Stranger: What else?

You: Tons of stuff. Philosophy, history, computers, music, biology.

Stranger: Well half of those need math and I bet you won't find a job for the other half.

You: Look what I read above for the math part.

Stranger: But it's wrong.

You: No it isn't.

You: And why are so sure of stuff that hasn't happened yet?

Stranger: I'm being realistic.

You: What If I prove you wrong?

Stranger: Good luck.

You: cool I hope so.

That guy is sadly mistaken if he thinks there aren't solid careers in writing.

RE: Debate on Omegle

The problem is that there is infact full time writers. They aren't especially common, but they exist, so therefore it is possible Derchin could be a full time writer.

Again, I agree with you. School does teach you things. And once again, you are missing the point entirely. It's not that I disagree with school's mission or the things it teaches. What I object to is that the students are deprived of any choice in the matter. As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.

I never said math sucked, I just said that me and the profession I want to go into doesn't need the higher level math that other fields require.
