RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: goobye

I hacked onto the computer. I've been kicked off my compute for two months, and had my vidya and phone taken away because of bad marks. Since I lied to my parents about getting homework done when I didn't, I've had everything taken away, so I probably won't be able to talk to you guys for long, except when I go to the library. I shouldn't have lied to them, but they won't listen to my reasons for not doing homework, seeing as how far up their heads are in their asses. Anyway, thanks for the replies. See you guys later.

If you're reading this, I killed myself.

I'm sort of in the same boat, for some reason my parents turned THIS on again and it's showing up on almost all of the SS pages I just tried to open, so I'll only be able to come here when I'm at school.

RE: goobye

Is that on a mac, manicrose?...

Summary
You can use key combinations to start up the computer in either single-user mode or verbose mode. These may be used for troubleshooting or software development.

Products Affected
Mac OS X 10.0, Mac OS X 10.1, Mac OS X 10.2, Mac OS X 10.3, Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.5, Mac OS X 10.6, Mac OS X Server

Starting up in single-user or verbose mode

1. Shut down your Mac if it is on.
2. Press the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and one of the following:
the "s" key for single-user mode. (Command-S)
the "v" key for verbose mode. (Command-V)
You have successfully entered single-user or verbose mode when you see white text appear on the screen.
To exit single-user mode type
reboot
then press Return. Verbose mode exits automatically when the computer's startup process progresses sufficiently and the blue screen appears.

If the computer does not progress beyond verbose mode, and does not show progression messages, press the power button until the computer shuts down. See this article for information about troubleshooting startup issues.

Maybe you could use that to give yourself an admin account or something.

Change an Admin Password in Mac OS X Single User Mode
This is a multistep process but it’s easy to follow:

First you need to enter Single User Mode. Reboot the Mac and hold down Command+S at boot to enter into the command line.
You’ll see a note where Mac OS X tells you that you need to run two commands in order to make filesystem changes, this is necessary so let’s handle that first
The first command checks the Mac OS X filesystem for errors and fixes them, it can take a few minutes to run:
fsck -fy

The next command mounts the root Mac OS X drive as writable, allowing you to make changes to the filesystem:
mount -uw /

After the filesystem is mounted, you can reset any users password using the following command:
passwd username

You’ll need to enter the new password twice to reset and confirm the changes
Don’t know the admin username? No problem
If you’re fixing someones machine and you don’t know the username to reset, just look in /Users with:

ls /Users/

Here you’ll see at least three items, .localized, Shared, and a username. The username is what you’ll want to change with the passwd command.

After the password is reset and confirmed, you can exit out of Single User Mode by typing exit or reboot. The Mac will now boot as usual and you’ll have access to the machine with the new password.

If you still care and/or there's some time left before you leave:

Did you ever get a text screen (white on black)?

Video example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJYHSmWAomM

So basically:
> hold apple - s during reboot
fsck -fy (or /sbin/fsck -fy if it somehow doesn't find it...)
mount -uw / (same /sbin/ shit if it doesn't work)
passwd root
> type password, twice? It won't appear on screen, no asterisks no nothing.
reboot

> log in as root with password you set. It shouldn't be listed, it should be at the bottom where you specify another user or something.
> add users/change shit

I hope you enjoy your trip, lol.
