RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

and letting them do whatever they wanted as long as they didn't just walk off or start fighting. It's true, I wasn't teaching but the sun called us out there and the wind insisted I let freedom ring (just a tiny little bell -ding ding).

Good grief, there goes another form in my file.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Just keep telling yourself its just a job.
It makes it easier everyday through self mental brainwashing.

Knowing what I know now about public education, I can't ever make myself become a teacher. I would never live with myself knowing that I just work to preserve the status quo and brainwash kids into conformity.

It sucks but sometimes you can sneak in some goodness. It's pretty hard to make a living without being part of some kind of oppressive force (excuse)

Thats not necessarily true. I'm just deciding that I will never work for the state. And unfortunately, today that includes more than just the IRS/cops/Senators, it includes being a teacher as well. (it shouldn't)

If I worked for the state I would probably try to sneak in some goodness but it would get squashed out of me. Or I would get fired cause I wasn't doing a good enough job at whatever fuckery I'd be supposed to do.

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

I'd get fired. Probably. Probably everyone would say they would get fired until they were in that situation and made excuses for themselves too, so I'm probably lying. Idk lol.

Kudos to you for trying to be a REAL teacher instead of those brainwashed, whiny hypocrites who call themselves "teachers."

You did what you thought was right and the kids would love you for it.
Be proud of yourself for what you did.
If I was a teacher I would've lost my job after the first day!

I tried that, it's difficult and I constantly got told I was doing it "wrong". Not only this, but frankly the kids don't appreciate it and often mistake kindness for weakness and try to take advantage. Not that I really blame them.

You did what you thought was right and that seems to be a rare thing these days. (Probably because people get in trouble for it). Their loss if they don't know how to appreciate is.

yeah most of the *trained* kids are basically selfish glorified sociopaths who look for any perceived *weaknesses* within each other or others around them to take advantage of.

Kids are bossed around by bully teachers all day and then come in and scream at me because I let them. And then I get in trouble because I have no classroom management. Whatever. Instead of examining why the kids are so pissed the issue is only why my class is so crazy. I say I let them express themselves and they're pissed. I didn't piss them off.

To create a natural environment you must let those emotions be expressed.
Schools try to keep a "professional and orderly" environment by punishing those who express this form of anger.

RE: reprimanded for taking my students outside

People put their own heads up their butts when it comes to going outside(also passing out rations of treats in the classroom). Lord, it's as if it's just easier half the time to do activities indoors, but then there isn't hardly any space. I mean, most of the time they really do enjoy it but it's like it's become something that's now a 'treat' in class. And 'supervision,' don't get me started.
