RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Solipsism
Have you ever wondered if you were the only person to exist, and that all other people and the world around you were just figments of your imagination? Though seemingly egotistical, I just found out about this stuff while looking up random bits of philosophy on the net.
Imagine if it's true, though? If I was just a complex character in your fantasy, or vice versa? Many philosophers have discussed the implications of such a theory, including Descartes and his contemporaries.
Anyway, here's the Wikipedia link to it if you want to look more into the topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solipsism

But that's the thing. What if you just appear to have consciousness, but don't actually exist? What if everyone is just an illusion to you, or me? To quote Carl Sagan, it's deep stuff.
If you're reading this, I killed myself.

RE: Solipsism
We may not exist, but the process of making a thought proves that something exists, even though it may not be ourselves. I don't think that can be doubted.

RE: Solipsism
It is an interesting idea but it has too much evidence stacked against it. Like, I can get stabbed lol

The brain in a vat theory is pretty interesting too.

RE: Solipsism
Even if it is true that reality is an illusion, because we at least seem to live in the world we perceive, it doesn't matter if our reality is actually real or not. It is real to us (or to me, if I'm the only person), so we might as well get used to it. Everything fits with the theory that reality is as it seems. Everything I do takes place in this reality. There is no logical incentive to question it.

Yes, however the stabbing could be a part of your imagination and the result of this illusion causes you to believe you are stabbed. Or the body (pain, to be specific) is affected by the brain's perception of what is happening.

RE: Solipsism
Every now and then I tend to think if everything is an illusion, but how can that be? How is the brain able to produce this highly realistic and amazing illusion but yet neurologists and psychologists haven’t stumbled on this yet? And it doesn't take into account everyone else. If everyone else is an illusion to everyone else and so on then what does that tell you?

They haven't stumbled on it because they're not real! Nothing is! Only you.
With solipsism, I figure the point of everyone else would be to keep you in the dark about you being the only conscious human on earth, so of course no one is going to tell you.
No, this is Patrick.

Then solipsism is self-defeating. If I say that I'm the only thing that exists, but you go on to say that notion too, then who's right?

RE: Solipsism
So then life is a game. I treat it like one anyway...
Even if this isn't true, it may be beneficial to pretend it is, because if people are only figments of your imagination, why should you care what they think about you? Their words cannot hurt you, because they don't really exist, and if their words do hurt, it's because deep down you're saying it to yourself and you need to stop believing it... and...
*brain explodes*
I've tried pretending people aren't really real a few times, it's actually quite fun.
