RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

"Children who miss school are missing out on the social side of things, which affects their ability to make and keep friends"

YES! School is obviously the only place in the world kids could ever see their friends! Never mind that because of the way we are forced to go to school, we live near everyone we have to go to school with.

When is it not OK for your child
to stay away from school?
• Holidays – don’t expect your child’s
school to automatically agree to
give time off for holidays in term
time. Holidays with an educational
aspect, such as foreign exchange
trips, are more likely to be approved.
• Birthdays – your child should
attend school, even if it’s their
birthday. Depriving your child of the
chance to celebrate their birthday
with their classmates is not a ‘treat’!
• Shopping – or any other activity for
which there is no serious reason for
your child to be away from school.
• Truancy – skipping school is not
acceptable and may well have
serious consequences for both you
and your child. Remember, parents
can still be fined or prosecuted
even if they did not know that their
child was bunking off.
• Informal exclusion – your child
must go to school unless the
headteacher takes formal action to
exclude, telling you in writing the
length of the exclusion and what
your rights are.

HAVING YOUR OWN LIFE IS NOT ALLOWED.

No, this is Patrick.

RE: More Government Brainwashing

Making sure your child
doesn’t miss out
Tips for preventing truancy

Blow it our your ass!

• Let your child know that attendance
is important and that it’s not right
for them to miss school.

Who is the school to decide not going is wrong?

• Is your child unhappy at school?
Are they bored or bullied, for
example? Contact your child’s
teacher as soon as possible if you
think there are problems.

I'm very unhappy, thank you. Too bad all my parents do is keep saying "BUT YOUR GRADES!! Goingcrazy "

• If your child makes excuses to try to
get out of going to school, take time
to listen to them. There might be an
underlying problem.

My parents don't listen, so there's my problem.

• Take an interest in your child’s
education, ask them about their
day and praise them when they do
well at school.

Education my ass.

• Try to make sure they get to school
on time. Arriving late can be
disruptive and unsettling for your
child. It also sets a bad example.

Disruptive because the teachers are so intolerant. Unsettling because of the reaction from the intolerant teacher. As for a bad example? They went to the dentist or needed more sleep... Is that a bad example?

RE: More Government Brainwashing

Fuck. This. Shit.

When/If I have children, they aint setting one foot inside school. I live in England and this piece of shit document pissed me off. I haven't been properly pissed off about school since I left for college but this has got me going again.

I'm homeschooling my children. And I'm going to give them the maximum amount of freedom to do what they like whilst conforming to the guidlines to avoid legal shit.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/parents/scho...dg_4016124

Quote:What's required of you

The facts about home education are:

you do not need to be a qualified teacher to educate your child at home
your child is not obliged to follow the National Curriculum or take national tests, but as a parent you are required by law to ensure your child receives full-time education suitable to their age, ability and aptitude
any special educational needs your child may have must be recognised
you do not need special permission from a school or local authority to educate your child at home, but you do need to notify the school in writing if you're taking your child out of school
you will need to notify the local authority if you are removing your child from a special school
you do not need to observe school hours, days or terms
you do not need to have a fixed timetable, nor give formal lessons
there are no funds directly available from central government for parents who decide to educate their children at home
some local authorities provide guidance for parents, including free National Curriculum materials

Quote:you're not legally required to inform your local authority when you decide to educate your child at home

Quote:Local authorities can make informal enquiries of parents who are educating their children at home to establish that a suitable education is being provided. If your local authority makes an informal enquiry, you can provide evidence your child is receiving an efficient and suitable education by:

writing a report
providing samples of your child's work
inviting a local authority representative to your home, with or without your child being present
meeting a local authority representative outside the home, with or without your child being present (representatives have no automatic right of access to your home)

The state isn't going to dictate shit about where my child goes.

It's as if the public needs to go to these public opinions to determine what they should do in private situations with their kids who aren't as accustomed to this singular set of conduct.

The Butthurt File Wrote:Did you know?
Every day 50,000 children of all ages miss
school without permission. Don't let your
child waste their potential too.

Should I ever have a child, I won't let it waste its (it = defining a child as object...) potential. Guess that means no school then.

The Butthurt File Wrote:* Taking an active interest in your child's education
and letting them know that you are not happy if they
do not got to school will make them less likely to
bunk off occasionally or play truant for longer
periods.
I actually had to laugh loud at that one. You know what doesn't make parents happy? It's if they have a problem because of school, getting depressed because of that and start having suicidal thoughts. When a child has a problem with school he or she won't care about what the parents think, they are a minor factor. They will just do it.

From which country is this? Ah, it's O.K., UK it is.

But you don't celebrate, when a birthday happens at my school all that happens is cake and selected pop songs normally. When I go to ACTUAL birthday parties, people talk a lot more freely, move more freely, listen to more than pop, play video games and eat pizza. I even saw a horror film last birthday party I went to.

• Shopping – or any other activity for
which there is no serious reason for
your child to be away from school.

Define what is a serious reason to be away from school.

• Truancy – skipping school is not
acceptable and may well have

exclude, telling you in writing the
length of the exclusion and what
your rights are.

Translation: Beat up a few people and piss off the teachers until they think "GOD GET RID OF HIM!!! PLEASE!!!" Then wait to be expelled.

I love how schools stress this "social aspect" and then they scold people for actually talking in school.

You can't win, although I must say that as a relatively quiet nonsocial person I probably had it easier. That being said, I still don't like being forced to participate in cheesy interactions with my peers-if I'm not talking, it's because I have nothing to say, and the fact that I don't usually prefer to work in groups doesn't mean I'm incapable of it.

RE: More Government Brainwashing

Sorry I just had to register here, I finished school few months ago, but I still can't get over it how much I hated that fucking place.
Whoever wrote this book need to fucking burn in hell, school is fucking prison, kids couldn't give less fuck about it, and fucking parents think that school is good for kids (ignore the facts that big number of kids are depressed, kill themselves, are bullied, hate school with passion).
No fucking school is not about socialising, you talk, you go to principal, It's for sure not about helping you in life, because it teaches you useless stuff, who gives a fuck about Shakespeare, Pythagorean theorem, or cells?

Omg I just got angry, really really angry reading some of parts of that book, who the fuck wants to celebrate their birthday with kids that he doesn't care about and not with his family, who the fuck wants to do useless homework every day and get no money or anything for it, who wants to go sit there everyday for 7-8 hours just waiting to get it over and go home do more homework and sleep and repeat it again tomorrow?

I could type much much more things but I'm just to angry after seeing this lol, and sorry If I spelled something wrong, I'm not American, I moved here 2 years ago.

Again I hope that bitch who wrote this shit, and fucking idiots who invented school burn in fucking hell forever, they ruined a lot of lives with their fucking decisions.

Whoever wrote this book need to fucking burn in hell, school is fucking prison, kids couldn't give less fuck about it, and fucking parents think that school is good for kids (ignore the facts that big number of kids are depressed, kill themselves, are bullied, hate school with passion).

More Government Brainwashing

I liked Shakespeare after I finished high school. Basically after they stopped trying to shove it down my throat.
