RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

I stood up for once and got Saturday detention for it

I forgot to let you guys in on a story that happened with me last Friday.

I was in D period and I was in a shitty mood. My friend had noticed this and he whipped out some of his drawing that he had made last period. He's a really good drawer and I if could, I would show you guys some pics of his artwork. Anyways, it cheered me up a little after seeing his drawings, but my teacher had seen us looking at it rather than taking notes like everyone else. So he stormed over to us, yelled (more or less) at the two of us that his work was more important than his "useless crap" and demanded that my friend hand over his papers or he'd get a detention. He snatched them away from him and then balled them up and threw them in the trash. He walked back to the board to write more stuff down.

Something snapped in me that day. I was actually tired of being quiet and passive about stuff, so I actually got up from my seat, walked over to the trashcan, unballed the papers up and tossed them back to him. I had the attention of everybody when I told the teacher that what he did was clearly wrong and he had no reason to do that. He told me that I had disobeyed his orders and told me to go sit in the office.

An hour or so later, I was given three Saturday detentions and a parent meeting.

There you go. Thumbsup

Dont go to anything but the parent meeting... Even if you were not "invited". Seriously you can take this even further and get the teacher in trouble if you play your cards right.

Whilst some work diligently there are those who ask why. I am one of them

It's not really that hard. You just gotta hype yourself up (that is if you're passive like me) and go for it.

But if for some reason I hadn't and the teacher grabbed them, I would grab them back, and if that didn't work and they crumpled them, I would get them back and try to fix them as much as possible, while telling the teacher plainly how they don't have a right to destroy other people's property, no matter how upset they get.

RE: I stood up for once and got Saturday detention for it

Here in Germany there is a position higher than the principal for each state. It's called "Ministerialbeauftrager", somebody from the ministry, who has to take every complain seriously. The older brother of a friend of mine sent that guy an email, because the principal forbid us to stay inside in school while breaks. The reaction was marvelous!
If, by any chance, you can find such a position in your county, get some (not illegal obtained [yes it's hard to get]) proof. Then write. She'll be in trouble for sure, knowing she has started the wrong orchestra.

In your case the proof are the crumpled papers and the witnesses. It is clearly property of others the teacher destroyed. I you can get your friend to write one letter to the position I mentioned earlier, the teacher is in trouble for sure.

is it even legal for teachers to just freely steal people's shit? i know they can take cellphones (which can somewhat interrupt an entire class) and force the parents to go to the school and pick them up, but is it even legal for them to just take anything they want?

That's the way to do it. Not passive. Not aggressive. Assertive.

If only I weren't so passive in action and aggressive in words I might find in myself the courage to do the right thing whenever someone abuses their authority.

^ Now, the moral of the story is not to be rude to teachers - they're as much prisoners as you are.

The ones who abuse their authority, however, are the ones that should be defied. Not rudely, either, but politely. Same goes for any classmates that feel the need to act superior for whatever reason.
