RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

"School exists so you can experience new things."
Says my El-Func teacher........again.
So we brought up the "why do we need to learn this?" argument back up and he pretty much said this:
> You're going need this in college. Professors won't be as easy as I was when it comes to note-taking and work.
> It's a fact that people's interests change, so it's okay to tech you guys this because you might eventually like it.
> Overall it's for the experience. To experience new things; to "break out of your shell".

The world exists to experience new things and break out of your shell.
My family will travel the world once the kids are old enough... instead of forcing them to sit in school.

My fucking counselor said inb4 "for the experience of it", but I don't get what he's smoking if an "experience of it" is apparently 12 years of progressively harder shit. People get degrees in WHOLE FUCKING FIELDS in 4-6 years... 10 if your parents want you to be a doctor to leech off your money when they're retired.

RE: "School exists so you can experience new things."
How is four years of being trapped in a building with miserable people doing useless bullshit an avenue for "new experiences" ? What "things" ? Drugs? Abuse? Sitting in a chair for hours straight and reading about irrelevant facts?
How about actually going out and spending that time to get and operate in a fucking job, so you can have the rest of that time to do shit you're actually interested in? How does that sound for a "new experience" ?
The truth is, you don't need to learn it. I graduated a year ago, and I don't remember JACK SHIT zero anything they "taught" me from high school. It doesn't prevent me from working effectively for whatever workplace I'm assigned with. It just sounds like your teacher is trying to make sense out of his career, no offense.

I asked my parents why we learn useless things in school (calculus) and never anything useful (managing a paycheck, doing taxes, cooking, driving, etc) and my parents said that the "useless things" as I termed them, would come in handy in a lot of careers (but not ALL, as opposed to the useful things) and then they hemmed and hawed and eventually said that the "useful" things we would have to learn on our own.
Really? It's completely backwards! You're forced to learn stuff that won't be handy unless you're an engineer or something (and then you'll have to relearn it all again in college or grad school anyway) but as for the useful stuff, which EVERYONE will need to know, we're supposed to learn in our free time.

RE: "School exists so you can experience new things."
Things I've learned through school (not in school, is to say):
- Drinking can help you forget your questions, therefor you won't have to find a answer
- Standard school test will induce depression once the grades a bad and you're to inexperienced to notice you don't give a shit
- I've met the person who gets me my synthetics once a month in school
- I've met a girl that has broken my heart and threw me into depression at school
- I've learned to suffer from school
- Ultimately, I've learned you have to cheat in school by one way or the other
- I've learned the honest person is always punished in school
inb4, school made me a selfish, sarcastic faggot who only cares about a few people and would like to see the world burn. Mission fucking accomplished.
I don't know what their goal is, but this does not seem right.

Lol, I should scan a copy of my Comptia notes and post it on the site. If you follow a certain rubric for taking and organizing notes you can learn most of what you need for a certain class out of the text book, then write in class notes from the teacher in the margins.

What? And be ignorant and naive about the whole truth behind school? Yeah, right!

RE: "School exists so you can experience new things."
Yeah I got chewed out yesterday because I made an F in a class for success strategies.
My dad actually think this class matters, let's get a run down of the last 3 grades.
- An oral report about careers
- Checking Agendas to make sure you have everything written down
That's it. Those are the grades for the entire grading period.
P.S. I've only heard people with no brownie points give the report, the group of girls who have massive brownie points don't have to do it and pretty much get a free A.
It's a joke because there wasn't even a 'sign and return' or 'show to parents' stamp, the whole class is for people who don't do band or orchestra.

We'd be better off in the workforce on our own, researching things in our spare time rather than have to go to High School.

RE: "School exists so you can experience new things."
I had better experiences taking outside classes and outside ROP classes than any class officially provided by my high school.
Quote: You're going need this in college. Professors won't be as easy as I was when it comes to note-taking and work.
That's what just about every stuck-up teacher said about high school in middle school to me. Granted I can't speak for a 'real' 4-year college, but my community college classes instructors have been pretty laid back, and I'm not taking the absolutely easiest classes.
Quote:It's a fact that people's interests change, so it's okay to tech you guys this because you might eventually like it.
This is true in a way, but still, you should be able to choose what you want to learn or think you might want to try, not what the school wants you to try.
Quote:Overall it's for the experience. To experience new things; to "break out of your shell".
Implying you actually experience 'new things' other than just doing slightly altered routine work each year through high school.

They try to say, 'You are free, and then give you school. They say that it is the essence of freedom. In reality, it's not. Of course, brainwash little kids and now you got generations believing it.

I can attest to this. My college professors are more often than not a lot more laid back. However, I have heard it gets really difficult in grad school. Thing is by then you will be focusing on what you like so the classes aren't nearly as bad.
