RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Worse, for then nothing would have meaning outside of the dream. As a Christian (inb4 religious argument this is my blog and I can say what I want, if it offends you don't read it) pretty much the one thing that gives me hope is that there is a life after all of this, because all of this (aka life in general) sucks. There are giant islands of garbage in the middle of the oceans, an ozone hole above the poles, and pesticides in, well, everything where I am; I'm in an atrazine hotspot, after all. Politicians are corrupt, businesses are ruthless, and everyone on this site knows the state the schools are in. Take away the hope that eventually it'll be alright, that God will return to the Earth and put to right the mistake Eve and Adam made all those centuries ago, and...
you have a sad little individual who has no reason to live anymore. Even still, all the feelings that accompany those thoughts (gee, thanks, hormones) crash in on me all at once every once in awhile, because I get it in my head that I am personally responsible for humanity's mistakes as a whole, and I need a place to vent them. I've kind of chosen here, since once you separate out the trolls you all seem like a decent bunch of people.

RE: The Blog of Gardening, Ponies, and Cats

We now return to our usual shenanigans.
Gardening:
It's official. I shall be spending the summer interning at the president of my local bonsai club's nursery! Biggrin I asked, he said yes, and my summer shall be filled with learning how to take care of trees from the most experienced person in my area!
He was also able to present some of his bonsai to my japanese club, and while I don't have pictures of them, there was one that really stood out- his satsuki azalea. To put this in perspective, azaleas are my favorite plant/bush/bonsai/flower. And the satsuki are my favorite cultivar of azalea. They're an evergreen variety that has been selectively bred for centuries in Japan, and their most striking feature is that they can have different colored blossoms on the same plant. Seriously, here's a specimen found in the National Arboretum in D.C.:
[Image: p395116-Washington_D.C-Satsuki_Azalea_Bonsai.jpg]

Ponies:
Well, the season finale was spectacular. "This Day Aria" is now my favorite pony song, and yes, that means Winter Wrap Up is now second best. I already have the lyrics memorized, and it's tied with, "How Ba-a-a-ad Can I Be?" from The Lorax as best villain song, though when I'm in a mood Mufasa's "Be Prepared" makes it up there too. Oh, and how about that changeling fight scene? I lol'd so hard when Pinkie Pie started using Twilight as a machine gun.

Cats: I just spent the last 45 minutes pulling burrs out of Mitten's fur. Poor thing had them everywhere, even one just above her eyebrow-whiskers. I don't even want to know how it got all the way up there. Anyway, she made it clear very early that I was not to even think about using scissors to cut some of them out by hissing and running away every time I picked them up. We finally developed a rhythm: I took her to the downstairs bathroom, shut the door, and turned on all the lights so that I could see her better. I set her up on a padded bench that's in there, and every time an area was getting too tender for me to keep going, she'd playfully swat my hand. (Claws sheathed, of course.) I'd then switch to another spot, and on it went. She finally let me get the burrs out of her tummy fur, and that was that. One burr-free cat.

Lol. Sometimes being watched by a rather jerky person on the internet is better than being all alone.

Sweet. I can take 2/3, and I usually label pony stuff anyway so you can skip it if you don't like it.

Well, I first got into ponies when I was in the target audience, as a 6 year old little girl, with the old 80's ones that were relatively decent. (As in, like, evil dragons steal some of the magical ponies for some evil purpose, and so some brave ponies go on a major quest to rescue them. Typical 80's cartoon.)
Now, I am 17, but a girl, and I watch it because, along with gardening and cats, it makes me feel happy, and so helps to stave off the crushing attacks of negative feelings I get from time to time. It's like looking at a cute puppy or kitten picture when you feel sad, only for 30 minutes with a storyline that reminds you there is good, somewhere. Once I started distracting myself with ponies, cats, and plants, my attacks of sad lessened. (It used to happen about once every two weeks, but prior to the major sadpost on here I hadn't had one in a couple of months.)
So I think I can say it's working, at least for me. I know better than to try and force it on all of you guys, though, hence the labeling and my posting retreat to just this blog.

But you are female and not male, and you are enjoying the show for nostalgia/inside jokes. But you really don't want to search pony thread simulator on youtube to see what the brony fandom is. Or google bronies on google image search

Oh, I know about them. I even frequent the brony site Equestria Daily. I just stay away from the darker side of the fandom, the kind that post images on Ponibooru or read "clopfics". Equestria Daily is nice because it edits out all of the gore and sex stuff that I don't want my ponies corrupted with.
And looking at the pictures...
I see a nice bunch of college kids. I know, there are some creepy looking older dudes who like ponies, but you know what? Old people are people too. And if it's an older dude chatting with me about Pinkie Pie's randomness, heck, I'm cool with it as long as it doesn't enter the gutter.

Well... maybe that one in the corner with the Pinkie Pie doll. But the rest of them just look like normal people to me.

Maybe it's like the Matrix... no, that'd be depressing... maybe it's a huge simulation people use for learning life lessons. I dunno.
