RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

The Blog of Gardening, Ponies, and Cats

Gardening: I live in zone 5b, which is basically, "we have four seasons, the summers reach 90 and the winters reach -15." Currently I have... way too many plants to list, but in general I have flowers, grass, shrubs, trees, bonsai, and bromeliads. (Bromeliads are... like this:
but also include orchids.)
My story today is about the magnolia, some exotic species from Asia that is white and has way too many petals, that lives in my front yard. Magnolias are different from regular flowering trees, because unlike normal flowers (which have stamens and pistils, and are pollinated by butterflies, moths, and bees) magnolias lack sepals and are pollinated by beetles. Thus you can imagine my amazement when I saw the bees buzzing around anyway! I guess they must still have nectar, even if they don't reproduce in the traditional way.
*Edit* I found a picture of one!

Ponies: Lesson zero was hilarious- I love all of the Doctor Whooves jokes that are flying around because of it, particularly this one:
created by AlCoconut on DeviantArt.

Cats: My family has four- Jumper, a pure black cat, Kally, a "special" tortoiseshell that used to be grandma's, and two sisters, Mittens and Onya, who are both calico.
Onya has somehow figured out how to climb my dresser and jump from the top to the bookshelf. Cats are amazing.

Well, there's my first blog post, and I plan on most of the others being the same format. If you like gardening, ponies, or cats, this is the place for you; if you only like one or two of those things, ignore the rest; if you don't like any, then what are you doing here, silly filly? I'm not making you read it, and I'm sure you have better things to do.

Where do you live to get wildly different temps like that?

Like I said, zone 5b. You can see places like it here:
http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/
5b is the lightest blue.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with changing seasons, (you might live in a place with a rainy/dry season cycle for all I know) but where I am we get winter, spring, summer, and fall. Zone 5b means that the lowest temperature we get in the winter is -15, and in the summer the highest temperature is usually close to 100. It definitely doesn't change like that every day, but the weather can be unpredictable, especially in spring and fall. Earlier this year we had about 4 days where it was nice and warm, in the 60s, and then the next day it up and snowed. (It has to be lowered to at least 32 degrees F to do that.)

I'm assuming the gardening is going well with the rising temps?

Yes. Outdoor plants are leafing out, and the indoor ones are enjoying having a few hours outdoors each day. I've even planted a few of my indoor plants outside for the summer, notably two new rose bushes, a couple of potatoes, and an amaryllis.

SaintVicious, I can never understand you. You always seem to be speaking a different language, like if someone with a deep southern accent was trying to converse with a French-accented Canadian.

If you are serious (which I highly doubt) we grew cucumbers in the garden last year, but my little sister ate them all. If I have room I'll grow them again, but I don't know if any would survive long enough to be sent to you.

I'm not going to kill my sister, you troll! She can have all the cucumbers she likes, she's the best sister I've ever known and the only one I've got.

RE: The Blog of Gardening, Ponies, and Cats

Since I'm here, I might as well make another blog post.

Gardening: The willow tree is covered in adorable leaf buds. It's about 3 stories high and really old, but the trunk is rotted and infested with insects. I'm not sure how much longer it's going to live, so last year I cut off about 30 small branches and rooted them. I gave them out to the Japanese club members as bonsai, and I plan on continuing to propagate the branches after the willow blooms and releases its seeds. Instead of having normal flowers, a willow has catkins:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catkin
which are really fuzzy.

Ponies: Poor Pinkie Pie.
http://mrwoo6.deviantart.com/art/Suiting...-290377824
You'd think she could get into it fine though; after all, she's appeared in all of these places:

Cats: They don't really want to interact with me right now; they're too busy playing outside now that it's warm.

Well thank you.
As for being autistic...
I don't seem like one on here, but that's just because I can take all the time I need to craft exactly what I want to say, and then double-check it, without having to worry about you staring at me the whole time. Irl, I would be stuttering and misspeaking all over the place, and I would barely be able to look you in the eye. I'm not hardcore autistic, like with the extreme sensitivity to light or noises (although I can't concentrate if I'm wearing thick socks, because there's this patch on my foot that thinks they're sandpaper) but it runs in my family. I've also never been officially diagnosed, but that's just because I'm what they call, "high on the spectrum". Autism is a collection of symptoms and behaviors, and I happen to exhibit more than the average person, but not enough to qualify for treatment because I can function in society according to the school's rules. They don't care that I can't speak in public or keep a group of friends for very long as long as I can do my homework and not disrupt class.

Urm, very strange. I have a friend who is autistic. He is sensitive too, but not to noises but looks. He would notice every single small detail, which most non-autistic people won't.

Also, his development is somewhat delayed. He is 12 and plays with toys and stuff...

But I don't think autism is bad, and it's not much of a disorder.. more like different, very different way of thinking?

Hehe. I'm in high school and still love My Little Pony, even the old ones, and I am really sensitive to things I'm interested in, especially plants. I could take any leaf you wanted and talk for hours about every aspect of it.
But yes, I think differently from other people. Mostly that means that I don't pay as close attention to social cues; sometimes I've found that people were angry at me for something I didn't even know was wrong, or I neglected to fulfill some obligation that was obvious to everyone else but me. And I love patterns. Origami is my friend- there are so many, many patterns there, and the repetition is just so soothing.

Thank you. I must admit that I'm rather chatty on here, but that's only because I absolutely fail at communicating in the real world, and its nice to have a way to talk to people without all of my phobias kicking in and preventing me from being articulate.

Yes, but it's not the same every day. I vary the times a bit, since my school has an alternating schedule. (I have 10 classes, separated into 5, and I go to each class every other day.) And of course it changes depending on homework and club activities. But generally, I wake up, get dressed, shower every other day, and go to school. After school, I get home, drop my backpack in my room, and check on the plants. After plants, usually my parents are home, so I talk to them and eat dinner, then do my homework (I had none tonight.) Finally I just have free time, where I get on the internet, read a book, or do origami.
That block of free time is subject to the most change, but it gives me a buffer to get my schedule back in check if there are any changes.

Why do you think the cucumbers allow themselves to be delicious? It is so that we will eat the seeds and deposit them elsewhere, and tend to the next generation of them. Cucumber plants are smart enough to realize that they can rise to plant greatness on the back of humankind.

Yeah, that's what my uncle is like. Thankfully I do not have the same obsession, though if someone interrupts me while I'm doing my plant rounds I become irritable.

RE: The Blog of Gardening, Ponies, and Cats

Gardening:
There was hail a few days ago, so the local Home Depot put all of its young outdoor plants on sale. I got some strawberries, tomatoes, and... cucumbers! I'll be planting them outside later this week, but the strawberries are going into a hanging basket. (If I can ever find the darn thing, that is.)
I also picked up a few cacti, completing my stockpile of items I've been saving up for a terrarium. One of them is called a moon cactus, and looks like this:
That top part is the real "moon cactus" part. It's a mutation that contains no chlorophyll, so it can't photosynthesize, which means it can't survive on its own. They had to graft it to a cactus that can support itself, as well as this colorful parasite.
I'm thinking about trying to graft my own cacti sometime, which will be a neat project. They say you need to, "connect the vascular cambiums" for it to work. Basically it means...
Ok, the vascular system of a plant is the system that carries water up and down to where the plant needs it. In a cactus, this is the inner core. When you chop open a cactus, it's similar to the inside of a pineapple. That inner core is the vascular tube. Then, you need to connect the cambiums of that, which is basically the skin of it. In a tree, the cambium is that little green layer between the bark and the wood, and is the only truly "alive" part of the tree. Since cacti are succulents, they basically have a rigid water sponge instead of a woody core like a tree. So, to recap, to graft a cactus, you need to connect the vascular cambiums, aka the edges of their inner cores.
Hooray for technical vocabulary no one cares about!

Ponies:
Everyone is psyched for the upcoming Royal Wedding. Twilight's older brother, Shining Armor, is marrying Princess Cadance! The episode seems to be drawing heavily off of the actual Royal Wedding in England. Have a billboard image:
*Edit* Hidden for your viewing pleasure. Otherwise the post is too wide to fit on the screen.
Hidden stuff:
Oh, would you look at the hat Pinkie Pie is wearing! Giggle

Cats:
She is big. She is puffy. She is... Big Puff. That's literally what we call her. Technically her name is Kally, and she belonged to my Grandma before she became wheelchair-bound. Her one enemy? Sleep. This is the cat that will jump up on the bed and aggressively headbutt you while purring like a diesel engine. If that doesn't work, then she pulls out her secret weapon- her cold, slimy, snotty nose. On your face. More than once I've been awakened at 3 AM courtesy of Big Puff.
She is declawed, but that doesn't stop her from growling at any cat that comes close to her. She is big, and her ear is all weird because she had mites and then an infection, so she is able to intimidate the other cats even though she is a clawless ball of fluff. It's actually kind of funny to watch, especially if you pick her up right after and hold her like a baby while she purrs.
This is a cat with no dignity, and no reservations. If you have food, she is there. Watching. Waiting. And the instant you look away, she is there, devouring whatever you have on your plate. I have seen her eat corn, cheerios, and watermelon like her life depended on it. And if you have meat, forget about it. Once she snatched a chicken nugget out of my sister's hand while she wasn't looking.

And now I must go. My garden needs me!

Just for future reference Story - http://tinypic.com/

Select the file you want to upload, on Resize - 15 ' screen is usually what I use. Then there should be a pre written [IMG] code.

Thanks! I think I'll leave it as is for now, but I'll be sure to use that in future posts.

RE: The Blog of Gardening, Ponies, and Cats

Hello everyone.
I've had a bit of a rough night, so there won't be any of my usual shenanigans in this post. It contains pony references, but that's not why I'm writing; I just need to know that others are here.

So, to begin, after school I participated in our school's musical performance of Cinderella. I'm nowhere near good enough to be on stage, but I play bass in the pit. I know a total of 3 people, one of which is the orchestra teacher, and apparently the other two are going through some stuff. That left me the odd one out, so I spent all of the intermissions in the prop room.
And in between absently humming this song:
http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/cinderell...corner.htm
and looking at all of the discarded stage props of plays gone by, I was struck with the full awareness of my own transience while still desiring to be the lead onstage, even though I know that none of it matters. It doesn't help that no one I know came to see the play, my dad said nothing on the drive home, and the only other person I have seen is my uncle, the sight of which fills me with an intense hatred I will explain at another time.
I found myself falling back into depressive habits, complete with musings on whether it would be easier to just end it all, so I did the one thing that seems to help in such instances: I turned to pony.
I opened my browser, looked at my email updates from FimFiction, and was confronted with the latest chapter of this fanfic:
http://www.fimfiction.net/story/19198/Background-Pony
which, for those of you who don't follow it, is about a background pony who is doomed to forever be forgotten.
In essence, I am feeling very profoundly lonely, and I just wanted some confirmation that there are other people who are real, and that I am real, without stooping to the easy solution of flip, slice, pain, and Bam! Reality check, in a convenient red-filled package, because if my parents catch me cutting again they'll take away my precious plants.

Oh but it does. It is a very easy thing for me to focus on, as once I slice everything in my body is focused on the pain, and I know that that pain is real, and so I must be real, and by extension everything else is real.
But I'd rather sit through every hormone in my body telling me to despair than do anything that would hurt my plants.

Sorry about dumping all of that on here, but the emotions had to go somewhere, and I needed to find a better outlet than my pocket knife.
