RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I don't say the pledge, so apparently I hate freedom

Okay, for some personal reasons and for the fact that while I love this country but I don't think we should forget it's flaws and only worship the good, I don't say the pledge.

So my narcissistic homeroom teacher calls me up after ISTEP, in front of the whole fucking class, and asks me if I don't like freedom.

WELL OKAY THEN.

We then get into an argument where she repeatedly asks me the personal reason, to which in a polite manner I reply "Fuck off bitch". Then she asks me if I'm a Jehovah's Witness. No. Alrighty. Strike two. When I say no, she asks me if I have had family members in the military. Yes. Strike three, get the fuck out of my ball park.

Then she asks me if they would approve. Yes, yes they would. HOLY HELL, 4 strikes, I thought I told you to fuck off after three. Then she dismisses me after getting butt hurt and says something to the effect of how I don't like freedom.

I was about ready to pull the "It's my fucking right not to do it and that's true freedom" argument but the bell rang.

Well, at least my history teacher handled it better, she asked me why I didn't do it, I told her personal reasons and that seemed to work.

This wasn't about our freedoms, and if it was the catalyst was her dislike for me. I have never had a teacher truly biased against me. It sucks. It really does.

One day after getting in trouble the last two days for no reason (literally no reason, she THOUGHT I talked, she (in front of the class mind you) separates me from the class to a desk in the corner, and then tells me I have almost no privileges.

She talks with my other teachers to, and from what I can gather she makes it seem like I stomp puppies and stole her money she was going to donate. She sent me to the office because I wouldn't put a bean bag down I was going to use, after she told me to put it up because screw me. She then tells the teachers this tale of how I completely disrespected her, and how I was stomping all over her stuff (my feet were on the edges.)

What really irks me to the point of reporting her for interrogation or humiliation or some shit, is that she with no regard for my comfort level called me up in front of the whole room and asked me whether or not I like my freedom, and explained what I did. Because that was warranted apparently.

RE: I don't say the pledge, so apparently I hate freedom

Go to the office and bitch like there's no tomorrow. If you're in a public school, teachers are legally forbidden to develop a bias against a person based on race, gender, or religion, and I'm guessing even if your reasons aren't in one of those categories it's still protected. You are legally allowed not to say the pledge, on account of the "and to the Republic" and "one nation under God" lines, for personal reasons, and you are NOT supposed to have your convictions berated in front of the class by a teacher.

Seriously, she could get fired for this. Complain and raise a stink, and you might get transferred into another class- that's what happened to me. Stupid teacher made my desk face the back corner because I was trying to educate myself and read rather than listen to her. I ended up in a different class within 2 weeks.

Yeah, but I'm in middle school. I'll only end up looking like a total douche. Besides, I figure I can threaten her with that later.

It will only make her hate you more. And trust me, you will only look like a douche to her. To the other students, you will be the one who stood up for your beliefs in a system that attempts to crush them. And if they still hate you for that, then who needs 'em? And if she's really as bad as all that, then chances are the other teachers don't like her either.

Heh, that anecdote I posted happened to me in elementary school.

Alright, I'll do that if it continues, but in Indiana, I'd say 99% of the students are Christian Patriots who think I'm a terrorist right now.

OH MY GOSH I WENT TO GREENWOOD!!! I actually transferred schools eventually, but seriously, I am in Indiana right now. That means our schools have to follow the same laws, and with the recent change (teachers now get graded and have their pay based on that rather than tenure) there's all the more reason to bring this to the attention of your administration. The new laws go into effect next year, so all the staff are worked up over who's gonna get a raise and who's gonna get cut.

99% is a bit of an exaggeration in my school, but I'm in the suburbia surrounding Indianapolis. I imagine it's different if you live farther from the city. Was your school affected by those storms? We got a few inches of snow here, which killed all the new growth on my berry bushes from that warm spell in February, but we didn't have any damage.

I'm North-West of HenryVille, but we got VERY strong winds and some storms. Quite a bit of trees have fallen around here. Sorry about the bushes.

Argument to counter the "Stand to honor those who sacrificed their lives for your country" bullshit. Edited very badly by myself with Photobucket's software.

Ah, down in southern Indiana. That explains it- you're officially in the Bible belt.
Thanks for the sympathies, but it's not like they had anything spectacular yet- they can grow it back. I'm more sorry for your poor trees!
I talked to my mom about it (she's a teacher) and she said that a lot of schools have it written in the school handbook that you must say the pledge. A contract that was signed by your parents, and not by you, which royally sucks. But the teacher still shouldn't have been a bitch about it, and if she continues harassing you you have every right to complain to the administration.

You're kidding me. You must be.

Heil the great nation, you! Fool! Don't you like freedom?

These schools today really are getting more like a death camp, and less like a learning institution. Oh, God. Perish the thought.

I hate how robotic "the pledge" makes me feel. It's stupid. Sapphire, your post makes me want to do this. I can't stand it. I always mumble the "to the Republic" and "under god" part anyway.

If a Christian starts bitching at you for not saying the pledge, you can mention that saying the pledge is idol worship.

But seriously the Whole. Damn. School. Thinks I'm some kind of anarchy loving terrorist who worships satan and drinks the blood of virgins on a daily basis.

Yes, yes, originally you had to Heil Hitler the flag. That was before Nazis, and was a positive gesture, just like the swastika was. Nazis ruin everything.

I suggest you quote Bible verses back at them. Fight fire with fire, or in this case religion with religion. Reassure them you're not a terrorist or satanist or whatever by saying, "Look, I can say 'I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.' without melting. See what I did there?" Then quote at them, "For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended." from Romans 13:3. If that doesn't work, have them recite the 10 commandments, then ask them where it says that you have to recite the pledge.

If both you and they are Christians, this should solve any problems they have with you, and if someone points out that the rest of Romans 13 talks about how you should obey the authorities, counter with what gore goroth said about idolatry. God should always come first, that's in the 10 commandments, and you can easily argue that worship of flag and country before prayer makes you uncomfortable.

I really wish the people in our forums which have this kind of bullshit happen to them would take it up to the press. Sure, inf the local level they can seem intimidating and act as if they have the right to opress you like that, but they really don't. And they'll look tyrannical if this is exposed. When it comes down to it, forcing someone to do something that is merely a symbol of an ideology is stupid, expose it and you have a good chance of making it stop and a better chance at getting that teacher who tried forcing you into trouble.

Most can't fight their programming.
They are literally trained to take it up the ass rather than say a word.
In LA and newyork people would rather pay some wannabe thug who harrasses them money to fuck off rather than stand up.

Also this image suits the topic.

The only thing I've done to try to get a teacher in some kind of trouble was complain about her going out of her way to completely disregard my friends health (needed to go the the nurse's office) and have a little bitch fest acting like writing a kid a hall pass in the middle of class is the end of the world. Took her 5 minutes to write a pass that, if she had not bitched about it, would have taken her 10 seconds. Then she acted like it was his fault for her taking so long to write a fucking pass.

Seemingly nothing was done.

More hope was lost for any justice in this world.

That's true for most out there, but we atleast know that school isn't looking for our best interest. Intellectualy atleast we owe it to ourselves to not take it up the ass.

Cases like this and the girl who's school demanded her Facebook password are clear infringement of human rights, you can't lose if you go higher up with this (namely court and city councils).

I think I'll just get my teacher (the same bitch) to try to deny me the basic human right to go to the bathroom. That'll be fun to talk to my local news show about. Smile

Am I the only one with a set number of passes? You get 9 every grading period (One for every week) and if you need to go and you've used them you get a white slip. (3 white slips equal detention, if you've already had a detention, each subsequent white slip grants a detention)
