RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Subjects thatvshould be taught in school
As regular classes, not electives.
Math (up to a certain level)
Health (first aid, CPR)
Life skills (balance checkbook, basic finances, how to save money)
Pschology (just basicnstuff, so people can stop being immature and understand why people do what they do and understand the consequences of bullying)
How to think critically (This can be done a lot of different ways, reasons for it are obvious)
History (not the brand in school. I mean going in depth and connecting it to modern politics)
Thoughts? Contributions?
The purpose of life is a life with a purpose
So I’d rather die for a cause than live a life that is worthless
I don’t need the circus or the day of national observance
I need you to think for you and stop being a servant

RE: Subjects thatvshould be taught in school
There can't be a set of subjects to be taught to kids, IMO, that could all be taught in a traditional school day. The list would go on, that includes their interests (could be quite a few) and the crucial things needed in life (like some of what you listed above). And you have to consider the number of kids per class and if they truly get the material presented. Trying to get everyone on the same level could take a while, in-of-itself.
The only way all this could be taught would be if it were offered online where one could simply watch videos, chat with professionals and read articles on specific subjects and store them for future reference.

RE: Subjects thatvshould be taught in school
I bet IamNoone means like the basics that everyone should learn excluding their interests. I think English should be, people at my school can't spell or even get remotely grammatically correct sentences. A few years of foreign language because where I live there's a lot of people who know foreign language and a lot of immigrants. More advance computer science. Like more in depth on excel and word and stuff. An art class of their choice, like maybe fashion design, music, painting or something . Like that.

regular school doesn't have the basics and tries to add advance things that most people don't care about.
If everyone knew more than one language there would be a possibility of being able to help immigrants, also many places have like majorities. Also Learning another language also helps with learning English.
In the first one I mean like excluding like autoshop for mechanics, majority of people are probably not going to major in art.
ART SHOULD BE MANDATORY BECAUSE IT HELPS YOU become more creative and think outside of the box, allows you to relax and many jobs need you to know something that uses art. architecture needs the ability to sketch and draw (last time I check), if you know music being an engineer that works with sounds would be easier.

Well it does teach most of the basics (math, english, science, art) albeit not on a understandable and exciting level for everyone.

It takes time to just learn one language. And to master it like it is your own language takes even longer.

The only thing more 'basic' than a public school education is an American public school education.
Quote:If everyone knew more than one language there would be a possibility of being able to help immigrants, also many places have like majorities. Also Learning another language also helps with learning English.
I agree but I don't see how learning a foreign language would help an individual with their native language. Language mastery comes from extensive reading, oration and debate. Not foreign language.
Quote:ART SHOULD BE MANDATORY BECAUSE IT HELPS YOU become more creative and think outside of the box,
Take your creativity and shove it up your ass. Art was the bane of my existence in school. Unless the teacher takes the time to teach the theory and mechanics behind art all you're doing is setting the UN talented kids up for failure and disappointment. Ditto with music. I went through 4 years of choral practice without ever knowing how to read sheet music, or play the notes on piano. How is that relaxing?
Quote:allows you to relax and many jobs need you to know something that uses art. architecture needs the ability to sketch and draw (last time I check), if you know music being an engineer that works with sounds would be easier.
Those are two very specific examples and they're not the norm. In the real world technical ability is what's required for most jobs, not art. Art is a hobby.

Aya pretty much summed up my point. It takes quite a long time to master one subject alone and traditional school hours can't keep up with that.

As far as I know they do teach you how to do things like cook and balance a check book. In my school, that all fell under home ec.

Basics about cooking food for yourself, basic things about money, banks, check books, ect. And how it all works, things about current events and politics (from this year or the last year or two, not from 20 years ago.
Also a full sex Ed class where they just give it to you straight, without bias or religious or other views put into it.

True. Home ec or independent living class. I know my school had both. Home ec in middle school and independent living in high school. Home ec teaches you the basics of cooking. Kitchen safety and food preparation techniques. The amount of cooking you actually do is minimal. A lot of that can be done on your own, but it's always beneficial to learn basic techniques and kitchen safety. Im guessing most schools assume kids learn that all at home, though. Most kids at my old school took home ec and independent living for an easy elective credit, though.

Yeah, we had debates about subjects that had to do with school. Questions like 'should school uniforms be introduced?', and 'should compulsory education be abolished?'. The teacher was really awesome too. He taught us things like 'use your common sense', and 'never trust blindly. He also told us that teachers and the government have little actual power over you. In short, pure awesome.

RE: Subjects thatvshould be taught in school
The implication that anything at all should be taught at public schools is a troubling one. By their nature, evident in the suffering of almost everyone on these forums, public schools are ill equipped to teach anything, much less subjects you would deem essential.
Also, in contrast to what you may see as common sense, it is often detrimental to "force" learning in any subject before the one being taught shows interest. If you need an example, think of how you and your peers feel about most subjects youbwere forced into.

I agree with this but you shouldn't have to start school till 11 years old and then go till your 16 and at that point you can go into the work force or intern to see what you like or even go to college and get a bachelors degree if you think you are ready for it and want to grow your thinking on one subject. Also you failed to mention basic Heath and consumer math also all these classes you should be able to test out of and if you are going faster then everyone else you should be able to skip some levels.

I see where you're coming from. But I'm doing Year 11 Psychology now and to be honest it's all easy as piss. It's all common sense and the rest is just scientific method and the brain (and eye I guess). Maybe this should be incorporated with those health classes you previously mentioned.
