RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Math is futile but not completely stupid...

I know many of us absolutely HATE math because of how the schooling system ha forced it down our throats, completely removed and interesting things about it, and made it simply a whipping tool to ensure order and another field in test taking.
Infact tests, and grades in general ruined math for me for a long time. I used to hate math. But now in my freshman year in highschool I've finally started to try to take my own personal interest in it. Even though learning it at school is quite frustrating, because everything goes by too quickly and testing is a bitch. But I've come to the thought that,
math is the futility against the infinite world.
How is math futile? Well math is all about following rules and principals, and if you follow the rules you will come out with the right answer. In math, there is correct and incorrect. Which makes math completely vid of meaning if your just solving for the correct answer, and proving things. Though math is futile, is it useful. When we apply it to the real world, like measuring the distance for a mile then it's put to use. But if everything were just numbers it would be different.
Now the problem is people try to enforce the laws of math into the real world, saying that things are wrong or right. Like government, and laws. Ugliness and beauty. All these things create negative reactions in our universe.
The beauty of math is that it is the only true thing in this realm that we can justify, and be very very close to perfection with. Math is the only thing that is free. And it may seem weird saying that math a thing of rule and principals is free, but when you think about it, it's the only thing that goes in it's course the way it's supposed to.
Society, on the other hand, is another story...
So if your interested don't give up on math, it can change your way of thinking. Also, even though the school system is totally fucked up, don't let it distort your views on anything.
And always question.

To be an anarchist, is to suffer greatly. To be a black woman is to suffer secretly. To be the earth, is to suffer silently.

I wish no harm on anyone, but those whose harmful ways will not stop without the same harm.

It's time we kill this cancerous system, before it kills us and everything left of gaia. Rise from our immaturity and take back our autonomy!

Re: Math is futile but not completely stupid...

That's part of why I always liked math. It always works the same way. And give nthe inconcistancy of the world (my family and friends are pretty good, but school is always different), having something where one always equals 1 is a bit of a relief.

Re: Math is futile but not completely stupid...

I've always been pretty good at math and enjoyed it. Sure, it's not as indefinite as the real world, but it felt good to have some control and know that if you followed certain rules, you'd get a certain result.

Math is kind of like language. We gives words to abstract concepts and things in our world to communicate, but sometimes, words alone aren't enough to explain everything. Math, like language, is useful in building our concrete infrastructure, but even then, numbers are unlimited and in calculus, there is the concept of approaching 0 rather than simply being 0.

Re: Math is futile but not completely stupid...

I agree. English is like that for me and I'm not even talking about writing my own shit. I'm talking about how much I enjoy reading into a text, seeing how the characters and their minds work, without some teacher breathing down my neck or turning it into a grade.

I've discovered that when you take learning into your own hands instead of sitting in a musty classroom, you actually remember stuff and its not boring as hell.

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

Hidden stuff:

GAH. Math. I don't like math. Yuck I don't like it when things can just be explained, and that would be the end of it. It's just....gah.

So, I was learning something, right? Then I went to school.

Re: Math is futile but not completely stupid...

its the math that you learn after say 6th grade where you hit the nearly pointless bullshit that math teachers in a highschool level are the only people whom might use it on a reagular basis.

now Only if my English classes actually taught me something.

Don't ever go into the following fields;

Engineering
IT
Chemistry
Architecture
Nursing (calculating dosage requirements for patients)
Any skilled trade involving electronics or electricity.
Finance
Accounting
Advanced Biology (including medicine)

Learning is awesome. It's almost impossible to learn in school, which is why I dislike it.

Re: Math is futile but not completely stupid...

ok fine, its not pointless, and I most likely end up in any of those fields, but then again I do no remember 1/8 of what I did in my math classes that related to doing any math work.

6th grade did basics on geometry and some work with fractions
7th grade dicked around with graphs
8th grade I got into fights using nothing but angle rulers. which sting after a while.
9th grade slept through half the class and passed with a high d
10th grade I cheated off of advanced placement students due to me not being able to understand the teacher( heavy accent)
11th grade, no idea what actually was "taught" in that classroom.

That's probably because you don't actually have much that you learned to remember...

Someone asked the bitch teacher what polynomials are for and why we learn it and she said "its algebra and you need it to pass the test." >:(

Also:
-d(a(du/dx))/dx+(d^2(b*(du^2/dx^2)/dx^2))+co*u+c1*(du/dt)+c2*(du^2/dt^2)=f(x,t)

Re: Math is futile but not completely stupid...

Polynomials are just a concept inside mathematics of several terms of one variable with different whole-number exponents, occasionally with constants. There's a bunch of different applications for them, but they're really not all-important.

Also, what the fuck is that? Is d a constant, are you trying to differentiate, I don't know.

(du/dx) denotes the partial derivative of u with respect to x, (du^2/dt^2) denotes the second partial derivative of u with respect to t, etc. - From some guy on a website.

Should be (d^2u/dt^2). Fucking Leibniz notation. I think you're referring to a second-order derivative, instead of a partial derivative.

The equation you posted, where'd it come from?
