And what about the Labyrinth with the shameful monster concealed inside? In a wider meaning it stands for the labyrinth of the social subconscious, in the dark caverns of which the real truth about the social order the students are being trained to support and perpetuate is hidden.

Within the grim walls of Welton, the real purposes of teaching the future bankers, lawyers, doctors, and politicians are hidden shamefully, and guarded ferociously. The students are taught not to think for themselves, to be followers in a herd, to lie, to betray their friends, to submit to bullying, abuse and beastly beatings, and above all, to dispose with the troublesome sense of personal decency. They are, in fact, being "devoured" by the monster of social expediency, ready to uphold the wrong, the unfair, the unjust, the greedy, and serve the powers obediently.

The annual sacrifice of the innocent youth who are fed to keep alive a monster hidden in the labyrinth is such an incredibly apt parallel to the sacrifice of the youthful ideals, inspirations, ethics, love of truth, honour, beauty, goodness, perpetrated annually by the schools, and especially the exclusive ones, preparing the offspring of the rich and privileged for the cruel roles they are expected to play in the aid of their powerful fathers. The teaching system is the monstrous half-beast half human who devours the innocence thus destroying the spirit in preparation for their "ordinary" life of serving the adult business world after they have been digested, that is, "schooled".
