RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Worst English Teacher Ever

There's probably been worse, but I don't know them. Anyways, so I have this awful English teacher. Our spelling words are words like "its, believe, definitely". But for some reason she asked my class to spell the different types of pronouns (our current brainless topic), such as demonstrative, indefinite, etc. We spell them all correctly and proceed to take a spelling test with words easier than the ones I had in third grade. At least then I could do some extra credit, more difficult words.

She also had us write a so-called theater review on plays we hadn't seen in a week. That week was Christmas vacation. Not only that, but we couldn't even see the stage because the powers that be (aka whoever decides seating) put us at the very back of the auditorium, which was also high-up. The woman had us use a faulty program, which included a clip with a completely different production of the play we were reviewing. I think that I forgot to mention it was a short play among many other plays, which were on short stories and poems we had read. Not to mention that half the time we were doing some assignment that made it impossible to enjoy the plays, so most of us were looking at the paper a lot of the time. And we were given no warning about the review at the beginning, so naturally we weren't trying to actually critique the plays. If we based our review on the clip shown? Points off. If we failed to notice the FCAs she stuck on the back of a sheet that seemingly just introduced the assignment? Points off. If we honestly couldn't remember a play we could hardly see and had viewed right before Christmas vacation? Points off for being vague. Accidentally put a title similar to someone else's or not catchy enough on your project? Points off, "just because I can."The lady (I shudder to call her that) also handed us a separate rubric. Naturally, it being a rubric and supposedly showing exactly what we were being graded on, I thought that was all we needed to have. Nope. Conveniently, anyone who got a low enough score could redo it, thereby enabling them to see exactly what went wrong (since they were given their graded reviews back) and fix it to get an A. Unfair for the others who had a bad but not terrible enough grade much?

This woman also gave us a very easy but large pronoun test a day ago (at time of posting). No complaints there. There was a "fun little activity" that you could do after you had completed the test. I took it just to see what it was. Apparently, some old student of hers had created a "match each celebrity to his or her real name" quiz. I don't CARE what these stupid celebrities' real names are. I'd rather read a good book, thanks all the same. Seeing as it's English class and there's nothing else to do, I figure that the teacher will let me read, right? WRONG. After noticing that I am not filling out her activity, Mrs. Awfulteacher (can't keep calling her "the teacher" or some such nonsense) comes over and says, "Derpina, fill out the activity. You need to participate so I can enter you in the contest. FILL IT OUT." Mrs. Awfulteacher then leaves, expecting that I will be a good little drone and fill out the sheet. I more or less complied and wrote "I don't care" in the blank where the letter of the name was supposed to go, thus enabling myself to read in peace.

Mrs. Awfulteacher has also gone against her own instructions with another project. Something about putting captions "in the box", which could have been anywhere from the piece of paper I was using to the picture we had to draw. Needless to say I got an 87 (I think) on that one.

Mrs. Awfulteacher forces us to get up and do ridiculous dances to remember things. Then she claims that doing actions helps you remember things better. Yeah, but it's doing the action that helps you remember the information when you need to know it. As in, writing the stuff down helps you because you are writing on a test. I'm not going to get up and start dancing and singing in the middle of a test, am I? Didn't think so.

On one essay, Mrs. Awfulteacher had us use the same editing steps 3 times in a row, spread out over a period of weeks. She claimed that it helps us on the MCAS. Right, I'm totally going to have that much time as I do long-comp, which is do, oh, at the END OF THE DAY. She has recently given us a set of editing instructions that take forever. What's the point of giving us this stuff? There's barely enough time to write your essay, let alone edit it. Why can't we just do stuff that teaches us knowledge, instead of packets on nouns and pronouns? Makes me want to tear all my hair out.

Now I dread going to her class. My classmates all dislike her, to a more or less passionate degree. Everyone has a bone to pick with Mrs. Awfulteacher, for good reasons. I, a high-honor roll student who runs to get to classes on time, have fantasized about skipping her class. With my other teachers, it's not really them that I dislike. Alright, maybe my Technology "Education" teacher, but he doesn't count as a main teacher. But with this woman...words fail me as to how much I dislike her and her class. Tech Ed is a picnic compared to her class, and my Tech Ed teacher is the one I dreaded all summer.

I'd put a pithy quote here, but I'd rather speak for myself.

Yes, I am in the bitterly cold, bureaucratic state of Massachusetts, where it appears that we put more emphasis on solar panels then on good teaching. Actually I'm in honors (we call it, for some reason unknown to man, Accelerated. Seems just as stagnant as everything else though) middle school classes for the seventh grade. We've repeated this stuff since third grade at least, I wouldn't know before then since we moved to the Bay State just before that grade.

I'd put a pithy quote here, but I'd rather speak for myself.

Bad, but I was letting my thoughts roam away from school when my English teacher asked me to diagram a sentence. Well I looked up and... the sentence. I don't remember what it was. But it was grammatically incorrect. That was annoying to me. I mean, you are an English Teacher, at least use correct grammar.

War is stupid.

RE: Worst English Teacher Ever

I know, my teacher does that kind of stuff all the time, and for some reason doesn't allow access to books. Except for this one time, when I discovered that she had them thrown in the bottom of a cabinet in a mess. Can't an English teacher be bothered to have a bookshelf and actually let us use it?

I'd put a pithy quote here, but I'd rather speak for myself.

RE: Worst English Teacher Ever

New addition: Mrs. Awfulteacher gave us a stupid little song to sing-to the tune of Frere Jacques, which is also the tune of another one of her songs- that is impossible to remember and gives no clue as to its topic. Great going. Then she gave us a massive nonfiction packet and had us use some of the steps in that MCAS prep song-which take longer then MCAS itself-for a selection. Couldn't even answer four out of the seven questions because she forgot two of the three selections. Thanks, but I have my own brain and I am NOT using those steps. EVER.

I'd put a pithy quote here, but I'd rather speak for myself.

RE: Worst English Teacher Ever

She. Is. Psychotic! I heard the teacher muttering something that sounded like "Shee-hwah" under her breath in the middle of class. And the way the harridan talks to us? It sounds as if we're kinder-gardeners that need reprimanding. I'm seriously starting to get disturbed.

I'd put a pithy quote here, but I'd rather speak for myself.

RE: Worst English Teacher Ever

I always thought it meant a nagging, unpleasant woman, but I suppose the meaning is up to interpretation. One of my favorite words to call her. Since the fiend (another appropriate word for my teacher) hates me so much, I'm writing my dates in Roman numerals to see how much it ticks her off. Some comic I read about filled his tax reports in with Roman numerals as a prank.

I'd put a pithy quote here, but I'd rather speak for myself.

Worst English Teacher Ever

My English teacher is worse. She misspells easy words, gets innocent people into trouble, gives too many C2's (C2 is two negative points and a sanction) and C4's (C4 is 4 negative points, removal and departamental detention), threatens us with C5's (C5 is 5 negative points and seclusion) even though only Directors of Learning, Deputy Headteachers and Headteacher can give C5, and is a homework lover. I don't mind getting a C4, because when I get it, I have a detention with the Head of English. And the Head of English at my school is my favourite English teacher. I want to move to her class, but my rubbish English teacher, my form tutor, my pastoral leader and my Director of Learning aren't going to let me :(. Last week I heard my English teacher say something about my favourite English teacher's class. At first, I thought she said I will move to my favourite English teacher's class if I'm good, but now I think she said that my favourite English teacher's class won't be any better. I couldn't hear what she was saying, because my classmates were talking over her voice. Also, this Friday she gave me five homeworks and all of them are due tomorrow. I already finished one when I was in late detention and I tried finishing the others, but they were too hard and I was not allowed to ask for help (We are not allowed to talk in detention). If I don't finish four homeworks today or at least tomorrow at school at 6 o'clock (My school starts at 8:45 but we can come in earlier.) I'll get a detention. And it won't be a departamental detention. It will be a detention with the English teacher that teaches me. Departamental detention is only for rudeness to teacher and if we constantly forget homework. And I don't forget my English homework often. And my English teacher also has a rule that if I don't want to be in her class, she's happy to see me go. I don't mind getting a C4 from the English teacher, but I do mind getting in trouble for no reason, her not teaching properly, getting a C2 from her and her giving five homeworks in one day and having only 3 days to do it. If she dares give me a detention for not finishing five hard homeworks in three days, I'll move classes. Plus my rubbish English teacher stole my pencil case!

Update: I didn't finish three of the homeworks that I had to do and she didn't give me a detention. And she didn't steal anything from me. I just thought she did it because it was not in my Head of Year's office, not in the welfare room (Nurse's office) and not in the science class. I found it a week later in my bag. I accused her of stealing my pencil case AND my maths book (Yes, I know it was very stupid of me). She threatened me with a detention, so I never did this again. However, even though she didn't mind me talking about the Head of English before, now she finds it rude. Now, instead of making me do the same work that everyone else is doing, she makes me do impossible work that even the Head of English can't do. And she still mispells easy words. Plus she doesn't give me any more C4's because she knows that I like getting them. And she thinks that "I hate you" is a swear word (she's pretty stupid). In September, she didn't even care about anyone writing on their hands. And ever since the day I accused her of stealing, she started teaching us about hell (Not because of me accusing her of stealing my stuff though). SHE IS AN ENGLISH TEACHER!!! WHY THE HELL WOULD AN ENGLISH TEACHER TEACH ABOUT HELL WHEN WE'RE SUPPOSED TO LEARN ABOUT HELL IN RS AND IN ENGLISH WE'RE SUPPOSED TO LEARN ABOUT ROLL OF THUNDER HEAR MY CRY?! HOW THE HELL WILL I PASS MY EXAM WHEN THE TEACHER ONLY TEACHES ABOUT HELL?! Guess what? My English classroom is a massive hell.

And now she doesn't want to show me my exam results. I hope I get a better teacher next year, preferably the Head of English.
