RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Psychic Dreams

Has anyone ever had a dream that predicts the future?
I've had one, but it doesn't really count. On the night my grandfather died at about 4 something in the morning, I had a dream that there were a shitload of dogs barking all over the place and there were really loud sirens, as if there was a tornado or hurricane coming through.

When I woke up, I shot up with a huge adrenaline rush, but I still heard the same sounds, (I was definitely awake) and a couple of minutes after I woke up the sounds faded away, and I am utterly convinced that it was tied to the death.

^Me to.
^^Even if you don't believe in psychic dreams, there is such a thing as coincidences, which are still cool to hear about.

RE: Psychic Dreams

I had a premonition in grade 4, where I dreamt about a play I was going to see with my class five months before we went to it. I remembered the characters, musical numbers, storyline, and even subtle things such as my friend Mitch scratching his chin in exact detail.

If you're reading this, I killed myself.

A girl/woman in my school (student) claims that she's seen ghosts do shit and the night her brother died she dreamed of "death everywhere".

RE: Psychic Dreams

I got a dream on the night my grandma died because she gave up living on life support, I saw death. And I continued to see death when my relaives started to die.
I often times have dreams of WWII air raids, ghost stories where I see the killings and dreams where I get attacked and crap. It's always cold and filled with adrenaline. When I wake up I sometimes get panic attacks and I always feel cold when I wake up.

You don't predict the future.
When you see something and you're like "OHAI I PREDICTED THAT" you didn't, it's your first time seeing that and the information was mishandled by your brain into your memory when really it wasn't a memory.

RE: Psychic Dreams

It seems like I've had rather vivid dreams before that have come true, but, honestly, there are rational explanations for it. Human memory is imperfect, deja vu is common and not supernatural whatsoever, and false memories can be created.

Kind of crazy though, like something out of a Phillip K. Dick novel.

Dreams are quite shitty sometimes. Once I dreamed of being kidnapped. Shit was scary and when I waked up I couldn't tell if it was real or no.

RE: Psychic Dreams

Once, my little sister woke up at about 2 in the morning, terrified about some nightmare she had. Only when she went to wake up my parents, they had both had nightmares too.
Then dad came to wake me up for school, and I had had a nightmare as well. Mine started out as a normal dream, (for me, anyway) with my history teacher conducting orchestra class, and for some reason there were a bunch of potted plants in the closet that hadn't died from lack of light.
Then the dream changed, and I was on a dark road lit with streetlamps. There was this little orange tabby kitten, and for some reason I knew there was a dog coming, and I was trying to lure the kitten away. The kitten kept getting distracted, and I knew we weren't going fast enough. Then some guy drove up behind us in a semi, and he climbed out of the bottom of the truck.
That was as far as I got before dad woke me up. Since all of us had a nightmare involving something bad about to happen to something, and all of those somethings related to my little sister, we kept her home from school instead of letting her go on the field trip she was supposed to go on.
I don't know what would have happened if she'd gone, but I don't think it would have been good.

"I have been allotted months of futility,
and nights of misery have been assigned to me.
When I lie down I think, ‘How long before I get up?’
The night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn." Job 7:3-4

Both of my parents are teachers. My body is bound, but my mind is free.

All kidding aside, I'm glad she didn't go. I'd rather have a sister who missed out on a lame trip to the art museum than the feeling of guilt if something bad had actually happened.
Note also that we only did this because all four of us had a nightmare at the same time. We've gone on plenty of other uneventful field trips with the school that were quite fun.

It was, in all probability, a coincidence. Nothing would have, most likely, happened.

It was not a chance we were willing to take.

I'm scared I might die in a car. What if I had a dream I was in a wreck? Should I not drive?
What is a gypsy fortune teller told me not to go to Idaho or I would meet with "misfortune"? Should I never go to Idaho?

Dreams are coincidences. Coincidences happen. In fact, randomness is a bit different than we imagine. Randomness can create large clusters.

And, to top it all off, it makes no sense that dreams can predict the future in the first place.

Have you dreamed that you were in a wreck?
Where would you find a gypsy fortune teller?
Why would you want to go to Idaho in the first place?
Of course it doesn't make sense that dreams predict the future. That's kind of the point of this thread- things that don't make sense to conventional science. Science never claimed to be able to explain everything, and it's kind of stupid to expect it to, and it's equally stupid to rule things out just because science hasn't figured it out yet.

And it's also pretty stupid to jump to conclusions based solely on circumstantial evidence and coincidence. I, for one, prefer to go the skeptical route.
