RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Help! Research arguments needed

So I'm writing an essay about how bad school is and I need some arguments to rebut. Perferably
as another source (like books and articles.)

There's a lot of articles on the main site. Also look up John Holt.

RE: Help! Research arguments needed

I looked that up vie google but I don't think that's what I was looking for, I was looking for common arguments on why schools are important and schnuff. Like what your parents or teachers may tell you. Thanks I have five books by Gatto for my research. They are really good too. I was addicted to reading them.

Again, I agree with you. School does teach you things. And once again, you are missing the point entirely. It's not that I disagree with school's mission or the things it teaches. What I object to is that the students are deprived of any choice in the matter. As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.

Thanks for the help though. I guess you can say that, I'm on the anti-school side getting arguments from the other side breaking them down until they are useless in debate. Smile like medicine to a disease.

If I remember I'll post my finished essay, if it sucks don't be surprised I really suck with English, Japanese and German are way easier for me to learn and use than English; however both of those are bad because I don't spend enough time learning and communicating with those languages. If you guys do like the essay I do (It will probably 8 pages+) you can use it if your teacher allows.

RE: Help! Research arguments needed

I'm once again asking for the power of School Survival net to help me in my research paper in my AP English Language class, this time I'm asking if anyone remembers reading an article about how you forget things when you stop going to school and such and if anyone remembers where that article is from. I remember it was an article on learning math. I'm searching the web for it as I type.
And thanks so much for helping me so much. I will definitely post my paper when I'm done, and if anyone wants to propose any changes or additions just tell me. I like reliable sources that make sense. Smile Can't thank you guys enough for putting up with my newbish newness and crap.

I've seen so much shit done to youth and for some reason, this has made me angrier than I've felt in years. Abuse and oppression happens all over the world. It's a terrible reality of modern society, but we've all accepted that it happens and we're doing what we can to fight it and build a better world.
But this...this mindless, condescending disrespect toward people who have no legal voice with which to defend themselves, this reduction of parents' betrayal into a cheap crack about kids being computer-savvy...it's like watching a surgeon joke about life insurance while his patient bleeds to death on the operating table. The media's job is to protect society from oppression and they've drawn a clear line between the people worth protecting and the people that don't matter. How can they people sleep at night?

Almost done. The first upload is going to be a docx file. It's the first version. If someone has a good edit and I see it when I get up in the mourning I'll probably do it.
EDIT:
here's the link to media fire to download it, will update if possible with more versions.

Thanks guys for providing me with the resources that helped me with my essay. It's about 10% of my grade. I'm sorry Prince Rilian and Soulriser for not looking at it before I submitted my essay. It was too late.

RE: Help! Research arguments needed

So I got my essay back, and it was a bad score. 111/200 ;( and now I have to revise it. My teacher wrote through out the essay that there was no thesis, no connections and no focus. I really need help. I've become so frustrated with it. I don't want to revise it.

Yeah I will give it to you. It'll take awhile since the computer that has it crashed, It's a decade old comp. Right now it's disk is getting repaired, that can take up to a half an hour, and it will take me awhile for me to scan them.
Edit #1
wait nvm. I might just use the scanner on this comp but this comp doesn't have the software,

edit #2
I can't use this comp for scanning because windows doesn't have the driver I need so, it'll take awhile, good news is that my other comp is halfway done.

Don't worry the revision isn't due until tuesday, and thanks so much. over 9000 internets for you. I promised myself that this semester that I won't procrastinate and I will try to get ahead in my classes. My mom said she would let me get my driver's permit if I get b's or better, not a gpa b or better average.
