RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

"This is for you."

Don't you hate when teachers say that? When you tell them you don't want to their work they pull that out. "This is for you. You're gonna need this to pass so you can go to college," card.

Not quite. I don't need to know Iambic Pentameter in my field of study which will most likely be in the sciences (I.P is a type of writing style Shakespeare used), so its not for me. And hell, some of aren't even going college so that expression is a mute. Well in my school, if that doesn't work, the teacher can just kick you out....

They like to pull it out when they have nothing else to threaten you with. They know teaching you this stuff is pointless and try to use that fucking expression as a means of justifying their shit; as a way of justifying why we should listen to their lesson.

Ugh, I hate it.

It sucks how you have to do the work to tell you, even though you know better and it's not relevant to you.
EDIT: Is to isn't lol

RE: "This is for you."

Today, I asked what the point was in learning about chemical equations, and the teacher gave some half-assed answer about college and our futures, and then when he realized he wasn't getting anywhere told us to be quiet and do our work.

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

I think I'll print that one a t-shirt or something. It's too fucking epic.

That's exactly what my teachers say. And then they kick you out if you keep bringing that up.

My teachers pause, think, and come up with a single scenario in a single job where you would need that information

RE: "This is for you."

No, it's not for me. It's your shitty confirmation to whomever that you have a meaningful job and/or the peanuts you work for so just don't gab to me about success any time soon.
I mean, in a way, it is the bread crumbs you're working for--points, grades, diplomas, degrees, jobs, money, all that stuff they hang in your face that you have to paw at if you want to stay ALIVE eventually. Certainly no one goes to school in America to learn or for proper job training.

My teachers come up with the "You're gonna eventually change your mind about stuff you like" argument to us.

Yeah, school made me desinteressed about certain things that interested me before. That was the only thing where I "changed my mind about stuff I like" in school.
