RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

" It is what it is."

Does this rebuttal irritate the hell out of you? Every time I argue against my mom, she always says "it is what it is". No explanation, no details, it simply implies the very essence of giving up, placidity, and ignorance. As arrogant as I sound here, I honestly think that my mom can't think of anything else to say, and after she murmurs the phrase, she'll switch from rationality to la-la-la I can't hear you la-la-la mode. Has anyone on here ever experienced this irritating rebuttal before?

If you're reading this, I killed myself.

My parents are like this. It is what it is. Its just much more conformism that most people out there think it is NORMAL.

They tell me that's just how it is. To me it says I lost the argument.

No, this is Patrick.

RE: " It is what it is."

I say "Shit happens" when something occurs that is completely out of human control, but I agree that "It is what it is" should be used strictly in the same way... When something is that simply cannot be changed.

I hate people who use quotes like "it is what it is" Brickwall

RE: " It is what it is."

"It is what it is" is useable in some ways. Like absent said though only in cases that are out of human control. Natural disasters for instance. Even then though evacuation procedures could be better etc. etc.

I had one teacher who ALWAYS said it. In fact, she had a wooden sign that said in on her desk in class. She said it ANYTIME someone tried to go against nearly anything she said. In other words it is often used to shut people up when you can't explain anything to them.

Damn it I know what you're talking about. Yeah, I hate that. Hahahahaha a wooden sign. That's hilarious. It's even more hilarious if the moron got it custom made. What's lousy though, is I bet whatever moron FIRST came up with that phrase thought they were all exponentially sage and clever.

Shqiponjë, I agree with you on it's usage towards natural disasters and things out of human control. I just posted the thread because the people who say it as a constant excuse for everything irritates this cranky man.

LOL that's fucking ridiculous and hilarious, it could very well fit in a movie or something.
