RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Is Going To Graduation Worth It??

To me it kinda just seems like a last way for people in school to get at you.....1.....last.....time.

how? Well for 1 thing you only get TEN tickets to give to your family and/or friends. yet people are bringing their whole goddamn neighborhood and when that certain person goes up. even though not alot of people from the school clap for that person. you notice the whole fucking crowd of parents/people behind you are screaming and clapping and stomping and all the students are like "Wtf is going on?? who is he/she??" doing that is my most biggest graduation hatred. When people try to make themselves feel important by faking a cheering crowd even though their Highschool life was very bland and generic all because THEY decided not to do ANYTHING. No Clubs, no Community Service, nothing. then comes when the students, or i should say the students that think THEY are more important than everyone else has to "BOO" the students they either don't know or don't feel is important to just clap for respect. it seems like a huge disrespect to the student and the student's family when people do that. but hey. maybe this thing is just me. but i don't plan on going to Highschool Graduation as it just seems like a waste of time and alot of work to get a piece of paper. So tell me what you think people. I'm hungry now and going to the NY Pizza. THANKS FOR READING!! Smile

Re: Is Going To Graduation Worth It??

At my middle school graduation the entire student section of the auditorium broke into applause when I received my diploma. I was the only person who was applauded by the entire student section, let alone a single student from the student section.

Two years later, I learned it was a joke that, somehow, everyone - all 300-something people - participated in. I don't really get the joke, but it did a lot for my self-esteem.

Trust me no it isn't but your parents will bully you into it anyway.

I hated my graduation. It's totally not worth it. There isn't one thing that I liked about it.

Re: Is Going To Graduation Worth It??

I went to graduation last year with the orchestra to play a few songs and it was alright. I go to a ghetto school so of course some families went crazy that their kid was graduating and caused some problems. (A few parents got kicked out for being unruly.) I would hate to walk across stage after a "popular" student because there is no way anyone will hear your name.

I think graduation is kinda worth it. It gives you some recognition for making it through school, and puts you in the spotlight for a few seconds.

Yeah. but not if some people are a bunch of assholes that ruin the moment by doing stupid stuff. i mean i went to my friend's graduation a few days ago and some parents or older brother/sisters in the crowd were actually "Booing" with the students when some people went up. i felt pretty sad to be in the crowd of people like that. But i really don't see the point going as i could just pick up my diploma after graduation day and just go about my business. i just don't get it. maybe i'm just really lazy. but my mom is gonna go crazy if i don't go, but hey, that's not for another 2 years so we'll see.

Re: Is Going To Graduation Worth It??

I know what you mean. Graduation ceremonies are fucking boring, and it's annoying to have to deal with it. I'll probably go to mine because of my parents, but if they didn't care, I would definitely skip it.

Re: Is Going To Graduation Worth It??

What everyone else said. Most likely your parents will make you go because it's a "special occassion." Why not? You suffered 12 years of torture, you might as well get some fucking recognition for it. People will always do stupid stuff, but don't sweat it. Did you want to invite many people to your graduation, seeing as you were angry you only get 10 invites? From what I've heard, graduation ceremonies are boring, but not as boring as sitting in a classroom for 8 hours.

I have to deal with the 10 invite rule as well, but it doesn't bother me. If anything, the only people I know who actually want to go to my graduation are this old guy who I've been working with at a homeless shelter for a year, 3 friends of mine who are in college and want to help me get through the torture fest (one of them wants to dress up like a gothic lolita for the lulz; it's in a cathedral), and my brother. My dad doesn't give a shit, and my mom might come. My other brother doens't give a shit as well. I don't even give a shit. I just want the damn diploma, but apparently, what we receive at the ceremony isn't actually the diploma. After the 2 hour mass, we have to go to the basement of the cathedral to get our actual diplomas.

Gothic lolita heh I'm sure you'll look very spiffy.
Well when you get up to the stage I hope you can pull off a smile as I couldn't
All I could muster was a frown and a so I wasted 12 years for this look.
God I wanted all those fuckers to burn in that building with the smiles plastered on their faces.

Re: Is Going To Graduation Worth It??

I see it more as completing your mandatory prison sentence.

Most of my friends and I agree that waiting a few hours to get a piece of paper that shows that you've taken it up the ass for a dozen years is a waste of time. I'd rather just take my diploma and continue on with my life like I've been waiting to do all of high school. Since my parents see it as something special, I'll probably end up having to go anyway. I don't think it's going to be as horrible as some people perceive, but it honestly just seems like a few more hours I'll have to waste before school releases its iron grip on me.

Shrug
I didn't go to mine. I don't regret it either. Probably not worth the time if you ask me.

Re: Is Going To Graduation Worth It??

I'm planning on going to my college graduation just so my family can enjoy it or whatever. I didn't really have a high school graduation ceremony. I did, but it was only me and 3 other people and .. it was very lame.
