RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: "You're going to work at Mc--" *SLAP*

I think the threat of "You're gonna work at McDonald's!" or something that is equally perceived as demeaning has to do with striking the Fear of Failure in the person being lectured. Because the carrot of "high-paying job" doesn't work as well anymore, the stick of "being forced into a demeaning job, often for pennies a day" gets trotted out to make the point stick. Though I don't know why fast food gets trotted out as the example, and I really don't know why McDonald's in particular. Or, if you have the dubious honor of being female in a family with relatives or friends of relatives who have no sense of tact, exotic dancing. Perhaps because of the reputation of such jobs as being low-paying, requiring little education, and being places where they hire anyone off the street with no "real" expertise necessary.

I have more to say on this topic, but I think that this comment has rambled a little bit already. I had a little more to say, musings like, "What do the people who use Working at McDonald's as a threat mean to imply about people who already do?", and similar with exotic dancing, and about why Starbucks doesn't get the same treatment, despite both McDonald's and Starbucks being customer service-y jobs, and both of them probably sucking as much time and energy out of an employee, but I didn't want to ramble too much.

Well it seems my progenitors have upgraded the lecture status.

Forgot some paper not at all integral to anything and apparently that warrants a 10 minute scream fest in which he tells me he is going to give up on me, how I'm never going to get a diploma, how I wont be able to work at McDonald's, and how he'll kick me out to let me starve on the street. Oh, yeah, forgot the part where he called me stupid and how my 9 year old brother is doing better than me. Why? Well because fuck me apparently.

Instead of mcdonalds I always hear, "you'll have to join the army" which actually sounds way better than school to me.

Even with the army, though. I've heard they now require you to have a high school diploma or GED in order to join. The army isn't so bad, though... For some people. All depends on what you like.

"But in middle school, tools are drawn to you when they find out you smoke weed. Its kinda annoying. Apparently, smoking weed is the most badass thing anyones ever done"

^^^ So damn true, quite a few people notice and acknowledge me now that they know I've smoked weed before. It's ridiculous.
But, I'm the 'a-sexual loner who hates society' as dubbed by others. I'm not really nerdy though, I'm in all honors classes, and school is incredibly easy, but I don't think that classifies me as a nerd. I hang out with relatively "popular" -hate that word- people.

Yes they require high school education, although you can drop out of school, then get your GED at the age of 16-18 depending on your state, then join.

The GED is easy as fuck, I've taken it. I'm pretty sure I could have scored well on it while frying on acid or some shit. It was stupid to the point where I was embarrassed while taking it.

RIP GORE GOROTH

He was an hero. He will always be remembered.
