RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Not really?

Biological males and females perform different reproductive functions. Amongst humans, this manifests through different genitals, body shapes, and hormonal chemicals. Sex does not always reflect of the gender of a human individual. There are no other innate differences between males and females, other than those constructed by society.

Ok don't believe me see you in a few years when you figure it out Smile

I already knoooooooow about how ladies and gents are expected to act differently! Just because someone identifies a certain way doesn't mean they have to fall into those stereotypes. :/

That's a problem with how society perceives men and women, and not a problem brought on by biology.

But yeah, I agree with you!

RE: What is your social status at school?

I'm the creepy immigrant that everyone thinks is going to blow up the school. I had a falling out with the arrogant miscreant that I used to consider as my only friend, so I don't really talk to many other people, unless if I get called on or something. The teachers don't know how to react to my ideas, and I constantly have a furrowed brow which makes my already witch-like face more unattractive to my peers. My social anxiety keeps me from meeting potential friends, and I'm extremely insecure.

So basically, the mute loner who is suspected to be plotting revenge plans on those who relentlessly tormented him for years. Angsty enough for you?

If you're reading this, I killed myself.

RE: What is your social status at school?

In high school, I was the quiet kid who never said much, I was known for being kind, but probably the shiest person in the school. Not to mention I look at least five years younger than I actually am, as a result of being so skinny (but I don't look at that as a negative now). I had some great friends who stood up for me and respected me. Hell I had a few girls go straight to me and ask me so many questions, but I'd freak out like the nerd I was and make myself look like an idiot. I never had the guts to ask anyone out, and by Junior year, I just didn't care anymore; everyone seemed so shallow and everyone who wasn't seemed to have a boyfriend already.

By senior year I was pretty much completely out of my shyness, but I still never said much. I did meet an awesome friend during my senior year who I found out was a furry like me, who I would have never thought was a furry through the first few months we talked. Through him I also befriended two others in the school who were furries and three other guys of varying "social status". Made senior year that much better making some new odd friends. Other than that I hung out with some stoners and their girlfriends. I never tried any marijuana myself, but most of the stoners in our school were laid back and had some hatred for the school which I shared.

In my community college its pretty much ending up being the same thing as high school, but I'm pushing myself to talk to others and get back onto Facebook and talk with some old friends. For some reason I can never stay on facebook long; every time I make a post it just gets forgotten besides one or two of my friends who notice it and everyone's post is just snippets from some stupid pop song or some old meme.

i'm regarded as and hang around the GT/humanities/pre-AP people (have been since like fifth grade although i've known most of them since second or third grade) and i think in particular i'm seen as intellectual, slightly sassy, and maybe 2deep4u or something i don't keep track of my social status really and while i'm certainly self-conscious in places i don't care all that too much because i'm not an egotist

It is totally depends on us that how others people behave with us so I think people tolerate you just because of your nature and behaviour. So you need to change yourself. Also you have to become positive and friendly with another people in your schools.

RE: What is your social status at school?

I don't really have a social status in my current school. It's online, so a lot of the social hierarchy is nonexistent. Or just not talked about. In regular school I was semi-outgoing once I was comfortable in my class environment. I had some friends, nobody I considered to be a GREAT friend, though. Had lots of acquaintances. A geek, I guess. The off-beat chick in your grade who you could talk to but not really ever fully relate to, if that makes sense. Had my share of bullying experiences.. Borderline loser, maybe? Never really got big into labels.
However, at my online school I have 0 friends whatsoever. So I guess if I was to rank myself based on a how-many-people-I-know basis, I would be a loser/loner. Tend to stay silent in online school since most of the kids are fanatical christian sunshine children with no common sense.

RE: What is your social status at school?

Yep, yep. With good reason, though. Pennsylvania schools SUCK! A lot of them are starting to be overcrowded and lots of parents don't want their children going anywhere near the regular public school system... Hence why online education and homeschooling are becoming so popular among parents/kids in Pennsylvania. (Did some research in order to convince my parents to let me go to online school). Even private schools suck, though. I've been to different types of schools. A Montessori school when I was a little kid (loved it! best way to learn!), homeschooled by the books, catholic school, regular public school, boarding school, and online public school. I have lots of experience with different schools.. Razz As you can see, I never really enjoyed one specific type. I miss Montessori school, though. Left that one because my parents moved from Erie to down-state more. Worst mistake ever!
