RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Guitar class: PLAY WHAT I SAY!

First off I'd like to say that I'm glad I get to spend first period every morning with my guitar instead of crouched over a textbook. That doesn't make the class any less shitty. All we do is read notation and play elementary level songs that don't really give us any skills. It's all the teacher, who at the start of the school year had only been playing for six weeks, cares about teaching us. Playing anything else other than what is in the beginners note reading book is liable to get you bitched at.

She doesn't teach any actual techniques. We just play boring songs out the book, when the essentials to guitar playing lie in technique, developing your ear, and practice. I know this, but most of the other students just follow along because they don't know any better. Because of this they aren't really progressing anywhere other than their note reading ability, which isn't even necessary to play guitar anyway. Most music for guitar out there is in tab. So why is she wasting everybody's time? lol

She split up my group today for talking. So now I'm going to take action. I'm going to print out a no fun picture and put it on the door leading to her class.

I also want to find a picture of her, edit it so that it makes her looking menacing, and caption it PLAY WHAT I SAY.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

LOL Print that picture!
This reminds me of when I was younger playing the keyboard. I only did it because we skipped class once a week to learn keyboard/piano. And it was so boring, she made us do songs with these advanced Asian students from some other school, and I was so bad that I was embarrassed. She always just helped her favorite Asian student from some rich smart ass school. So one class I cracked it, and just slammed my face on the keys and banged the thing as hard as an a 8 year old good. Oh damn that was good, she flipped it. I was having a seizure by smashing my head and hands on the keys acting like a retard lol And after that I never went back.

lol, do it. Biggrin

Also, that sucks. I progressed much faster learning guitar on my own than I ever did with someone teaching me...

As a kid, he banged his head against a musical keyboard.

He would grow up to bang his head against a computer keyboard.

RE: Guitar class: PLAY WHAT I SAY!

Sounds like she can't play all too well but doesn't want to admit it to the class so she makes you play shit that she can play. When I subbed some classes I totally forgot some of the shit I was supposed to teach. I sat there and told the students, "I totally forgot how to do this crap."

Funny because they actually listened to me more after I said that. Seems they respected my honesty.

RE: Guitar class: PLAY WHAT I SAY!

I taught myself to play guitar. I can't read music for shit but I can solo and play anything that isn't insanely difficult.

No, this is Patrick.
