RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Education in Bulgaria.. someone get me out of there

I doubt you know where Bulgharia is located. It's a tiny country. Very unpopular. But yeah, it is not in Asia. It is in Europe. You heard me right. Europe. We have school too. We have education too. But you can only 'dream' about such education...

First of all, let me introduce me to you. I am in Sixth Grade. I hate school from fourth grade. That's when I realized there is something very scary about it.. I realized that the system doesn't work properly. Not only here, but in the world too.

I feel bad when I see how American children complain about their school facilities, rules and so on. Come and see our schools. They are old, communist buildings with no paintjob whatsoever, everything is gray. From the corridors to the classrooms themselves. The situation is so poor that our heat - supply sources are made from... cast iron. The joinery (the windows) are still made from wood, or at least 70% percent of them.

Already feel frightened? That's just the beggining. Tired of this math homework? Come and see what we study here. We have a class called "Home Work and Way of Life", where we use machines made in '40s to create stupid things from wood, iron, paper or fabrics. Yes, even the boys have to knit. My Physical Education constantly bullies me because I am not able to fulfill the norms. I almost repeated the grade last year, because of this. And I am an A student. Yes, you can repeat the grade for failing Physical Education. My Arts teacher makes us draw hard things, and I cannot draw. I have social anxiety from her, because you can fail the grade for not able to draw too. The bullies are everywhere - if you cannot fight, you will end up seriously harmed. Students do drugs behind the school, no one cares. The warden is shorter than me (I am 5 ft 8 tall, and he is like 5 ft 6. Who the hell hired him?)

Most people think I am a nerd, just because I've got good grades. You can get bullied for getting good marks. Seriously. I once did. Nazism is tolerated. I can't stand another six years of this 'education'. I don't remember anything I learned in those six years. It is pointless. And the thing I hate the most: At the end of the year, we throw our yearly report card into the dumpster. We carry our report cards every day of school.

Get me out of there, I can't live another six years like that

RE: Education in Bulgaria.. someone get me out of there

I'm sorry to hear this, this is no way near as bad as I had it. I do know where Bulgaria is, I'm on the other side of Europe. I hope for your sake you can find an alternative, good luck.

The alternative is homeschooling, but it is nightmare there. You have to take exams for various subjects every day in the week

That all sounds fucking terrible, it makes the problems of school here in the U.S. sound like a walk in the park. I hope you can find some way to get out of that mess.

I am Greek, so I DEFINATELY know where Bulgaria is. In fact, I have relatives that live in Greece but work in Bulgaria, I hear Bulgaria is beautiful. But I'm not so sure about the education system. Are you by any chance an Anarchist? In Eastern Europe there seems to be a lot of radicals.
Are you orthodox?

No, I am too young to be an anarchist. Seriously. And I don't like them, to be honest. Yes, I am orthodox. And you must have heard wrongly - Bulgaria is terrible compared to the other countries in the EU.

What do you mean too young? What do you believe to be the ideal government of a nation?
I never said Bulgaria was better than other countries, I just said it was beautiful.

I'm sixth grade dude. And I am a bit of communist, I don't know why. I just like the idea. My parents are communists too.

The nature is beautiful, you're right.

Are you roughly 12 years old? Because that's how old sixth graders are here.
I admire Communism, however I don't support vanguard parties or authoritarian communism, I'm more into the libertarian communism and anarchy. So you're a left winger? Haha welcome aboard! Biggrin

I love the whole Balkan peninsula. I just love Europe in general. I love the natural beauty of the world.

Never too young to be an anarchist! I'd argue that most babies and toddlers are atheist/anarchist! haha

RE: Education in Bulgaria.. someone get me out of there

You're never too young to have your own opinions...they just might change as you get older...which is ok, because life is a learning experience. I used to be a communist too, but then I realized communism only works in small groups. When you apply it to a country, it just can't work. It can, but people have no rights, the quality of life is generally worse for everyone. Of course capitalism is much, much worse...not sure what type of government you have in Bulgaria at the moment.

No, this is Patrick.
