RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Do you think civilisation is fragile?

People keep talking about the end of the world and society collapsing bla bla, but when you think about it civilisation came about by itself, it's self sustaining, self-repairing. Just like a living organism, it wouldn't be around if it couldn't sustain itself. I think civilisation is too adaptable to disapear anytime soon, and I doubt humanity will ever ever go extinct, there's just too many of us spread out all over the place, and we're too diverse. Even if there was some major epic global catastrophe that wiped out pretty much everything, I bet there will be some tiny pocket of human survivors somewhere.

Even if there was an apocalypse civilization would continue. Albeit on a much smaller scale.

Laugh
Sounds about right.

But still, if some crazy shit happens and everyone goes nuts, it'll only be temporary. Somehow people will find some order in chaos again and build up some kind of civilization again... for better or worse.

Civilizations fall as history has shown but humanity will continue to exist til the world becomes unlivable. Well unless we manage to get to another planet.

RE: Do you think civilisation is fragile?

Humans are too resilient to just dissapear overnight. There will always be some degree of civilisation on the planet as humans continue to exist. The only way to destroy civilisation is by destroying the entire planet.

I think most humans would be stupid enough to do that.

We're already doing it, only most people are too stupid to notice that.

No, we aren't. We are changing the state, the shape of the planet, we are changing it, not destroying it. Even if we destroy the nature around us, which I assume is your point, its the nature, and not the planet that we destroy. And with that, ourselves.
But once we are away, the whole nature is going to regain itself again, and we'll be gone.

The problem is, that, infact I think we already have the power to destory the whole planet, or we are currently developing it. And with destroy, I mean really destroying it.

RE: Do you think civilisation is fragile?

If civilization falls, it would probably take a lot of time to rebuild. It took 1000's of years to build up to the shitty one we have now.

No, this is Patrick.

RE: Do you think civilisation is fragile?

The chance of a one mile asteroid hitting this particular planet is extremely low I assume, so I'm not worried about that happening.

In our lifetimes, it's unlikely. Over the course of history on a geologic scale? Once every 1-3 million years. I seriously doubt that we'll make it that long, though.

Humanity is an extremely resilient species, so it is possible we will still exist several million years from now, but it is unlikely that we will still be living on this planet.

RE: Do you think civilisation is fragile?

What I idiotically left out of my statement was that I meant humanity as it is today. There will probably be genetically-modified humans with some characteristics of other animals, cyborgs, and different human species for different worlds( taking into account the effects of high/low gravity and radiation on the development of children).

If you're reading this, I killed myself.
