RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Need help with Steam
I don't know if this thread belongs on this part of the forums, but it is game related, so i think it does.
I fired up my computer today, and i wanted to play a demo of a new game.
So, i downloaded said game via steam and tried to play it, but when i clicked on the play button, nothing happened.
I tried to play another game, but it was the same thing.
I've got the latest updates for steam, and i still have enough memory on my computer to run whatever game i like, but i can't play games with steam.
Does anyone here know how to fix this problem?

RE: Need help with Steam
Do you get the small "preparing to launch window" and it doesn't go past that? If so, log out and go to your steam folder then delete clientregistry.blog, then see if it works then.

I don't even get a 'preparing to launch' window.

RE: Need help with Steam
Steam is fucking shit.
Press Control+Alt+Delete or go to task manager
then look under processess
Find something like "steam.exe" and end process. Then wait 10 seconds and launch steam again.
If this doesn't work, find Steam in C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam and launch steam that way.

Delete clientregistry.blob anyway, that fixes most problems
also ignore efs he is the macfaggot a while ago who could not into steam. I've had literally no problems with it that couldn't be resolved with deleting clientblob

RE: Need help with Steam
Guys a dumbass, but still I hate Steam.
Forced updates to play games + half the time stops responding + sometimes fails to load + sometimes I can't refresh server list if someone else in the house is on steam = Failure.
And I have a good gaming PC that can play Crysis and shit on max settings, yet Steam fucking sucks.

RE: Need help with Steam
Oh no they are patching my games ensuring I have the right version to play with others that's fucking terrible
also it has never failed to load for me and I don't quite know how that happened but the server list thing only happens if you have a shitty router

1) At my mums (where the problem occurs) I have an awesome router where I have port-fowarded everything that was necessary. At my other house I have a shit router but that's irrelevant since I don't use steam there.
2) Maybe you're lucky or I am unlucky (or both).
3) Yes, patches are great. But the user should have a choice, the only time the user must be forced to update is when playing online on official servers.
For me I've had to constantly reinstall Steam because it just seems to mess up it's own data. And sometimes it just stops responding for no reason. Even after reinstalling the client + ALL OF MY GAMES.
Plus, downloading off Steam is SO SLOW. I have a 20mbit dl connection and sometimes I dl from Steam at like only 200kbps.

No. I'm not the only one having these problems. There are thousands of threads on the internet of people having similar or the same problems with Steam. It is kind of enraging when you buy a game that installs fine but sometimes you can't play it when Steam fails to launch properly or download an update using shitty Steam servers. My cousins have Steam too and they get slow speeds, but they're internet is way faster than that.

and there are millions who have no problem
also shitty steam servers? they very rarely go down and I've never had problems connecting, and for me stuff downloads at the speed of sound.
