RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

My rant about school in general
I used to actually care about the grades I got. I would get annoyed at myself if I failed or didn't get above a C.
I used to even enjoy some assignments at school. Last year I enjoyed writing newspaper articles for newspaper class, but this year I don't care. I've written one mediocre article this year, and I like to consider myself pretty good at writing things. School has drawn all the fun out of it for me. I'm stressing too much about tests to care.
Like I said, I don't care about grades either. As long as I get that magic passing 70%, I couldn't care any less. And why should I? School doesn't give you a reason to care, no rewards or anything like that besides a letter on a piece of paper. It's meaningless to me.
Teachers wave papers in my face and complain about bad grades, but it's nothing more than one of four letters on a sheet of paper. It doesn't mean anything to me and it holds no significance to me and doesn't feel very important; it's paper and ink, after all. And I know a lot of people who feel the same way and I'm sure some of you do as well.
The testing system is broken. I memorize everything so I can pass the next test, then I forget everything I just memorized and move on. It isn't an effective method of teaching, we all know this. But parents and teachers always ask me "but sharpie, how else will we measure how much we've taught you?"
Well, aren't you the all mighty authoritative adults who know everything and are superior to me in every single way? I'm sure you can come up with something new. Oh, wait. You're too distracted with your fucking daily power trips to use your brain to think of something new.
Some assignments felt like they had meaning to me, felt like I was getting something from it. Now it's all pointless busywork. And I can't stand it when teachers finish their lecture early and give us some useless problems from the book to occupy us. We could use the last 20 minutes of class in a better way than that.
School doesn't even teach us anything we'll need in the "real world", like how to cook food and balance checkbooks and such.
I can cook tons of different foods, I can manage money damn well, but there's tons of people who can't. Why aren't there classes to teach kids about money and how to manage it from an early age?
I'm done, this is getting damn long.

Wow. True.
How do you "measure" something like knowledge anyways? And what in hell do they truly "measure"?

I guess your ability to memorize things, because that's all you really do to "study"

RE: My rant about school in general
You can't really measure knowledge, a person acquires the certain knowledge because he in interested in it. Not because he has to for no reason, I mean come on, we learn things in school that will never be used in the future and what we learn have chances of disappearing in the near future.
All men who have achieved great things have been great dreamers.

This is so true.
However I have to argue, that as much as I hate school and a lot of the stuff is pointless, it's not all bullshit knowledge, some of it is interesting. I just don't like the way they teach etc.

I agree, a lot of things in my symposium class, which is about the brain, greatly interests me. Also some of the things in english class are very useful to me, as English isn't my first language.
