RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

A TEACHER understood!
Boy i've been active here lately
Anyway, today I had a talk with one of the teachers at my school about the way I felt about high school/life after high school. She completely agreed with everything I said.
Shes a science teacer I believe, and I had her just once. I've seen her alot of times around the school. She even said schools really are for brainwashing before I even mentioned anything.
Things she agreed with:
High schools way of learning isn't for everybody
School makes learning boring
They tend to make things complicated when it can be taught much quicker
It teaches obedience more than anything
BRAINWASHING (Still shocked she said that)
People tend to learn or can learn on their own better, on their own time (she notes the internet)
A highschool diploma should not be the measuring stick (jobs, overall intelligence)
Also, she asked me this. What do you expect after finishing college? I said a good, high paying job. She said she can't really pay the rent on her own, and her moneys eaten up by bills, throw in taxes in there too.
She told me if anything in my situation, I should go for online school. She also agreed the school isnt making it any easier for me, since they have this amazing Block program thing that makes it easier, yet knowing im ridiculously behind, they refuse to put me in it.
AND, she spoke to my mom for a second, suggesting I take online school. Coming from a damn teacher, she disagreed. & now shes getting people to talk to me who see it her way. I've learned to accept the fact that my mom will NEVER understand me, no matter what.

RE: A TEACHER understood!
No surprise to me. Some teachers in my school believe that same thing too.

RE: A TEACHER understood!
I wish my teachers were like that, but half of them make fun of me because of my grades and the other half just don't give a fuck. And my parents are the same way as your mom, I don't see what they aren't understanding, I really don't.
No, this is Patrick.

RE: A TEACHER understood!
There are indeed some cool teachers out there. Some of them have even visited here... hey, get that teacher to sign up here?

RE: A TEACHER understood!
A cool teacher! MIRACLE! THANK YOU GOD!
Most of my teachers at my school are nice, but when it comes to if I ask that "Is this even important for our lives?" And they say nicely and detailed but actually it's like this: "YES BECAUSE YOU NEED TO LEARN THIS SO YOU CAN GET A DIPLOMA AND GET A JOB!"

RE: A TEACHER understood!
Oh how often have I heared that. But, hence my class is a bit curios and asked for what we need that shit after we got a job, they'd tell us that school trains brain patterns on learning and widens up our horizon

RE: A TEACHER understood!
Your mum may not understand the situation, but I'm surprised that teacher does and she seems pretty cool. Maybe you can try to get some classes with her if your mother doesn't let you take online schooling.

RE: A TEACHER understood!
There are a lot more teachers that don't want to really put up with the education system but are in a position from where they cannot do much. At least this is the normal explanation I get.
However I think this is bullshit. If they'd get their asses up to kick ass together, they could really get something together.

RE: A TEACHER understood!
Yea while teachers are generally d***s a lot of them admit that public schools ,and high schools in particular , are filled to the brim with corruption...
Gotta say though, I never met one who actually realized the whole concept of forced schooling is just plain wrong . Talk to that teacher more dude
