RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

School and failure.

Let me start of with few quotes:

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston Churchill

"Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm." - Winston Churchill

"Failure is always an option." - Mythbusters

"Don't be afraid to fail" - Me (and probably thousands of other people)

What's wrong with failure and school. Seriously. We are not allowed to fail anywhere, we are expected to get everything on first or second attempt. If we don't, we get shouted at, we are told, that we are failures with no future, just because we failed to write a sentence correctly, or solved a math problem and got a wrong answer. But when a teacher fails something, it's totally ok, because "Failing is in human nature", then why can't we fail. Nobody becomes a "pro" at something without mistakes, you learn from mistakes, that's how you become better at something. So embrace failure and learn from it, because failure is in human nature.

Here's some stories from my personal life:
I'm an electronics hobbyist and I have burnt dozens of electronics parts, because I plugged them backwards or soldered them incorrectly or lifted the solder pads.

I've been programming since 14 years (now 16), sometimes I sit for hours searching one simple mistake that I made in my code.

One time in my programming class, one girl missed a semicolon at the end of the line, when the compiler spewed dozens of errors (all linked to the semicolon) she started crying and told me that she was a failure and was unable to learn, I quickly found the mistake and fixed it and told her that everything is ok, but she started panicking and crying even more, because it was such a simple mistake. I was all "the fuck woman?"

Ask anyone who just got their driver's license and are driving for the first time on the road by them selves. Mistakes are made.

I'm sure you know stories like this yourself.

RE: School and failure.

School sets people up to fail, and then punishes them for failing.

No, this is Patrick.

Yea, probably, but the thing that I don't get is why we get punished for simplest mistakes? Why?

Yea, probably, but the thing that I don't get is why we get punished for simplest mistakes? Why?

Because the system that schools use nowadays wasn't intended to help people learn in the first place.

RE: School and failure.

Yep, look it up Google

The "Prussian System" wasn't created to aid learning. It replaced a better system that existed before it.

I think I'm gonna print that on one of the T-Shirts I'll be wearing on my graduation day. That should really motivate the smaller pupils.

Yup. Luiz if you look on the internet for your history lessons you will find that what really happened is 90-100% different to what schools teach you. Also google
John Dewey
Horace Mann
John Taylor Gatto, and if you have time, read his books.

Enjoy your red pill, Neo.

It's done to erode the student's self-esteem, and also to invoke fear and guilt.

RE: School and failure.

Was going to start bitching about you bunping this, but the OPs post is great.

The purpose of life is a life with a purpose
So I’d rather die for a cause than live a life that is worthless
I don’t need the circus or the day of national observance
I need you to think for you and stop being a servant
