RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Essays > Tests

Am I the only one who thinks this? Provided the essay is on something that interests you, of course. In an essay you can learn to express yourself well and really think about what you're saying, but in a test you have to cram for a night or two and then vomit all your thoughts out on paper and forget it all. The thing is, in school you have to write essays on completely pointless things like how the Xing Dynasty was better than the Ling, instead of topics that interest you and that actually matter! Teenagers DO have interests, you know, contrary to popular adult opinion... Cuckoo

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

RE: Essays > Tests

Writing essays isn't too bad for me. The answer is a lot more flexible and not just right or wrong.

No, this is Patrick.

RE: Essays > Tests

Recently I seem not to be as good as essays... seemingly because teachers are being more fucking strict with their certain ways that they want them to be and they're often about shit I don't care about. So meh. Tests just tend to be easier, SOME of the time, though they're also getting worse. I used to barely study at all and get decent grades, but now... meh... fucking AP classes.

It's so much simpler to just fail all your classes and sleep everyday.

RE: Essays > Tests

Depends on the essay. If it's on a shitty topic, then no, I'd rather do the test.
However, English essay > Maths test.

Essays are also easier to research online and possibly even blatantly copy if you're careful enough.

I hate writing essays in school. I suck at them. I usually get an F.

RE: Essays > Tests

Often times in the AP and honors classes I've had they'll implement essays in to the actual tests. If you have no idea what you're talking about and haven't studied at all it's very difficult to wing - when if you have a standard multiple choice test you can just reverse engineer the answers and make educated guesses. But if you actually know the material which the essay is covering then I agree, it's a lot more enjoyable to just write out the answer in essay form.

Absolutely despising the essay writing which is going on in my English class though. I feel as if the class was designed for the illiterate. We have to follow a specific chunk writing formula, disabling us from having any structural creativity in our essays. There's some papers where I understand a loose structure must be followed but this formula is very strict and is on papers where the writing is in fact weakened by its use. Most of the essays we write are for expressing opinions and making arguments. The formula would be more understandable for more scholarly work such as research papers. It should be optional so that the students who are weak writers have it to fall back on, but myself and the others in the class who can write shouldn't have our grades lowered just because we stray from the formula.

Who am I? Who are YOU?
