RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Didn't know where to put this...

Hey y'all.

Some of you may not know me, I haven't been on in ages. But I was pretty active here a few years back, and came on a few months ago for the hell of it.
And I'm not here to say "I'm back! I'll be posting a lot now!" Because I won't.

Not because I don't want to, and definitely not because I've all of a sudden changed my philosophy and am an avid pro-schooler or anything, just because I've had and will have other things on my plate. I was just filling out college applications and thought of this place.

I'm a senior in high school now, and I made my school-survival when I was a freshman. I was frustrated and over stressed and had nobody who truly agreed with me. I found this place and it became a community where I felt accepted, where my ideas and thoughts had worth.
I know this forum has gotten crazy and over the top sometimes, and there have been plenty of "This place is shit" threads.
But seriously? THIS BOARD ROCKS.
Because even though we all haven't started the revolutions we'd meant to, even though some of us are still in the school system we despise, this is a place where we can get things out, where we can talk and not feel like someone above us is pushing us down, where we can argue and bitch and debate without feeling like we're automatically less than the other person for any reason, age, education, whatever.

When I talk about my freshman and sophomore year, the years where my straight-As turned to Bs and Cs, when my teachers thought something was wrong with me, when school was a living hell, I STILL think of those years as extremely positive for me.

Mostly because of this board.
This board.
I found it by googling "I hate school" one bored day, procrastinating, hoping that the pile of homework, assholes at school, and stress would go away soon.
Through this site, I found The Teenage Liberation Handbook. I found Thoreau and Holt and Emerson and poetry and literature I loved and that touched me. I found acceptance from others and myself of things I'd felt for years but had never felt safe expressing. I found out that learning was more than doing what you are told, that learning is life.

Basically, I just wanted to say that this place helped me so much and that I'm so fond of this message board-it kept me sane until I figured out my OWN reasons to do well in school, which have motivated me infinitely more than any bullshit patting on the head from "superiors" or fear tactics from teachers could do. It taught me what kind of person I did and didn't want to be. It made me think. It taught me to argue, with others and myself. It taught me more about critical thinking than any school lesson or english class. It taught me that there are people out there that feel the way I feel, and that I am not alone, ever.

Really guys, thank you.
This place changed my life, even if all my plans didn't work out like I'd hoped. I'm still in high school, but I am doing what I want to, and I'm going to go to college for what I want to do, and I now know the difference between what success is for me and what people want to define as "success."

Thank you for keeping me sane and letting me speak my mind and teaching me to be my own person.
Stay awesome.

Carla Franklin may be a whore. She may be a wonderful, kind, moral woman. Seeing as I don't know her personally, I cannot know for sure. However, I find her actions (suing Google, requesting the personal info of her critics, getting angry over random internet idiocy that she should ignore and be bigger than, trying to get this site in trouble because of a few users' commentary on the situation, etc.) pretty ridiculous and unwarranted. If she didn't want people to to be talking about/judging her, well 1. that's impossible, she's a human, and 2. she shouldn't have been a model or agreed to be on film. AND 3. she DEFINITELY shouldn't have sued Google and made all this fuss over a few random idiots whom she probably won't ever know expressing their opinion. Mmkay? MMKAY.

This place has helped me a lot too. I used to think that I was the only one that saw how fucking stupid school was, how stupid the government was, the pointlessness of life...people here tend not to be the same dumbass people I'm used to dealing with.

No, this is Patrick.

You know, this forum also helped me on keeping my sanity ok. It is right now a heaven to me, and It is helping me to stop being so worried with school stuff, at least for a while, and to forget homeworks, smart-asses classmates and grumpy old teachers.
Thanks, SoulRiser. If it wasn't for you, then my mentality will STILL be like this "OMYGOD I RECEIVED A F. I'M SO STUPID." "I DON'T HAVE FRIENDS. I'M SO ANTISSOCIAL." and stuff.

I agree that this place rocks. Here you feel accepted (yes, even me, with very different views) and I'm not being bitched upon. And you can laugh for days just by reading random topics. And.......

This place is the best on the internet.

Welcome back. Yeah I like this place.

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

And yes, I'm being serious. I can't recall someone bitching upon me on this site, except the regular debates and arguments, but I don't mean bitching in that way, since by that logic I bitch my opponents too (which is true?)
