RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

In my school we're required to do three sessions of community service per year as a requirement for graduating, and tonight I was studying using some Constitution Flash Cards and one question caught my eye: "When a high school requires its students to perform mandatory community service, doesn't that violate the Thirteenth Amendment's prohibition against involuntary servitude?"
Obviously not, so I looked on the back of the card for the answer and all it said was that the Supreme Court considered this matter and decided that no, this requirement does not constitute involumtary servitude. But why? I know it's not slavery or anything but still...
And then of course there's the whole matter of it BEING TOTALLY FUCKING POINTLESS. Is it supposed to instill good values in us? Yeah that'll work. I'll totally want to do community service after I graduate after all the pleasant memories of being FORCED into it for four years. Thanks, high school!
Maybe it's just the fact that I've had some unfortunate experiences in the past, like being made to work at a soup kitchen type thing and get harrassed by this obviously mentally unstable guy. I also wasn't allowed to leave the kitchen so I had to just stand there and serve food while he leaned up against the counter. Fuuuuck.
Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."
It is too slavery, in a sense. If you don't want to call it that, call it fucking servitude. Not NEARLY as bad as the serfs or the blacks had it, but slavery none the less. We are literally being forced to do work with no compensation and no choice in the matter. It's fucking bullshit.
Not only is it forced work with no pay (that is all of school actually) it also makes people much less likely to go and do community service of their own free will.
Community service is fucking retarded, and I hope the cockhole fuckhead moron who invented it died in the most horrible way possible or that he does if he's still alive. Are you paid for it? Nope. Are you forced to do it? Fuck yeah. You're forced to do work you won't be paid for, and that's motherfucking slavery. It doesn't instill any good values at all, and doesn't encourage you to help your community later. In fact, unless you're a completely brainwashed fucktard, you won't learn shit from it and you'll prefer being forced to listen to Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black for 6 hours than doing that community service bullshit.

"Within a few years a simple and inexpensive device, readily carried about, will enable one to receive on land or sea the principal news, to hear a speech, a lecture, a song or play of a musical instrument, conveyed from any other region of the globe." - Nikola Tesla
Meh I think it's pretty shitty that it's mandatory to graduate. My school requires a total of 40 hours from grades 9 through 12, but someone got their diploma without doing community service, though they don't let you "WALK THE STAGE".
My experience was fine though, worked in a hospital soldering electrodes and shit, it was really relaxed. Although I had to wake up one hour earlier and leave one hour later it seemed to be much less exhausting than school.

Just using you guys as free labor.
I got through a program so I didn't need it and people I knew just lied about the community service hours(what retard works for free).

Exactly my point.

Attendance is required, participation isn't. You can go to school every day and just sit in the office with a book for five hours and they can't do anything about it. As long as you're in the building, you're not a truant.

You gotta be in class, otherwise, your teacher will mark you absent.
absent =/= truant. If you can prove you were in the building you fulfilled your obligation to attend school.
Don't get me wrong: You do this and the school will throw you into either ISS or detention as means of coercing you to go to class and do your work. But as long as you stand your ground and refuse to work, there is nothing they can do about it.
Here's what I don't get...here you have to be at least 16 to drop out. I'm 16 now and I can drop out but I still cop shit from teachers and are forced to obey rules etc.

Just in case the novelty is lost..
I meant that laws and statures are rigged to fuck over normal people.
^Exactly. Just because we aren't required to work doesn't mean we won't be fucking ourselves over. It's still a form of coercion. If you do, you're fucked, if you don't, you're fucked.

Yup and what with all the degrees you need to get a job that keeps you off the street.

Are you sure? I think people at my school said not going to class is TRUANCY. And I think they violated some California shit. Maybe I should sue them
