RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Did Christianity make sexuality taboo?

I guess Romans and Greeks and shit were much more open with sexuality than today... weren't they?...
BUT STILL, people have worn clothes for thousands of years, so I dunno.

RE: Did Christianity make sexuality taboo?

Clothing is normal for protection. Somewhere along the way people began to see it as covering our nude selves. I blame religion heavily for the sexual taboo.

Agree with unschool. Any religion can do that, not just Christianity.

But Christianity/Judaism seemed to be one of the first, if not first, 'antisexual' religions... amirite? God I should get my lazy ass to research.

Control a person's sexuality and it isn't too much harder too control them completely. Making sex (outside of strict rules) a sin was their greatest idea ever... oh that and indoctrinating children.

RE: Did Christianity make sexuality taboo?

As a Greek I blame Christianity. The only thing Christianity (Orthodoxy) has done for Greece is liberate them from the Turkish invaders. But even then Christianity was only used to bring people together in terms of revolution. But Christianity has killed many of my people in past, and to me that doesn't cancel out. I don't understand how %99 of Greeks are Orthodox and that we don't have a secular state. Separate church and state!
Also, in the Ancient times when Greeks were "pagans", they achieved SO MUCH MORE. Look at Greeks today and they're fucking blind. I wish Greece was like it was before Christianity, if not Pagan then at least Atheist or a Secular state.

RE: Did Christianity make sexuality taboo?

I'm sure Christianity had the most to do with it all, but I think human nature suppresses sexuality from a sociological standpoint. We are particularly bad breeders in general. Humans can only produce one child every nine months, and lets not forget it takes a full 13-15 years to reach sexual maturity. That leaves what ...maybe a 30 year span of time where a woman can bear children before menopause.

I say all this to point out, that if a society is run by its elders...and its elders have the conscious ability to be upset over their lack of sexual fertility. Somehow, someway, it will trickle to the bottom.

Actually no. Thats silly. I mean perhaps there is some merit to it. But I can't prove it. Withdrawn, but it's definitely there for consideration.

Perhaps sexuality is frowned upon due to jealousy. "I'm in charge and if I can't have sex, why should you?"

Many young girls/women are attracted to the old gentlemen type. Same with young boys/men and cougars.

No I just feel it is used for control, not jealousy... the taboo on sex that is.

RE: Did Christianity make sexuality taboo?

My idiot brother always puts up arguments for Christianity like "Society made it all this way with Christian values, do you think we would have this level of prosperity if Christianity didn't exist?". My counter-argument is "How do you know it wouldn't be better without Christianity?".

This may sound horrible to say, but if we didn't have so many old folks imagine how much more of a free and open society the youth would have.

I'd assume a more open one but with a lot of the self-hating youth I don't know. Yet, I don't think that has to do with jealousy of sex, maybe jealousy of youth. Our society has separated itself based on age. Older people see youthful people and get jealous. Youth see older people and get angry. I think sex taboo (especially between different age groups) is just a side effect of age discrimination.

Public schooling has a lot to do with that. JTG mentions that part of the problem is different age groups are pinned against each other.

I really agree and to be honest the separation of age groups in school was one of the things that got me questioning schooling all together.
