RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

It's the same here - no homework, you fail.

RE: Don't let your grades affect your self-esteem

I hate how, when you enter higher classes, they are always "hurr durr you have more responsibility blabla", but then are like "herp derp, let's just check if everyfuckingbody did the homework".
If people are old enough for responsibility, they are old enough to decide on their own if they do homework or not

But that would be logical, and logic is against the schools' policy.

RE: Don't let your grades affect your self-esteem

Well, I'll be reading this thread after school tomorrow. I'm probably going to fail a math test that's worth 12% of my mark, but IDGAF. I got to spend a great evening with my girlfriend, and bonds are more important to me than useless pig fodder that the wardens feed us at school. I'm lazy as fuck, but calculus will never apply to me after school is finished.

If you're reading this, I killed myself.

Righto.

I've always observed how people act with their children in public. If I understand what hate is, then there's no question that most people hate their children. They probably all got pregnant by accident and were pressured into keeping the baby.

RE: Don't let your grades affect your self-esteem

I just wrote a paper on how school should not be mandated by a government to increase educational success and this site was extrememly helpful. I always thought that I was the only one against school, but not against education. I truely love learning, and love the idea of school, but it just doesn't work for me and I could never figure out why. I've always wanted to be a teacher too, but I just hate school, but now I realize I can have hope to teach others with out having to conform to the methods of public schooling.

RE: Don't let your grades affect your self-esteem

I definitely felt that way in 10th grade. I failed my spanish 2 class I hated so much, that was taught by a guy who couldn't even correctly pronounce anything he was teaching. I hated the class and fell so behind in school work that it drove me nuts with anxiety. I failed the class and had to redo it this year. But throughout my 10th grade year I started to feel increasingly shitty because 1. Bad grades in spanish and 2. getting good grades in classes I didn't even learn anything from. I actually felt profoundly guilty for getting high grades and not giving a shit about class. For getting high grades with minimal effort. It's easier to pull off in online school, trust me. Now I'm a junior in highschool and have the same feelings, but worse. I actually hate math to the point where I fear doing it because I don't understand it and don't learn the way they teach math to us. Now, when I try to do the homework and spend lots of time on it, only to get a failing grade... It really does something to your self esteem and confidence. I don't think I've ever felt so stupid, depressed, and anxious in my entire life. Not to mention state standardized tests (no child left behind), the looming thought of SATs, and having additional tests we have to do ever 2 months in order to check our 'progress'. A lot of anxiety provoking stuff. It's sad that I hate school and that's it's really done a number on my self esteem, but it has. I wish we were taught not to take 'failures' with grades and such so seriously to the point where it chips away at our self esteem.

RE: Don't let your grades affect your self-esteem

one thing you should realize about grades: If you know already that you will get a bad grade, dont even try to do good. you will be yelled at by mom the same amount. i remember for marking period 1, i failed just 1 class, and just barely passed all the rest. mom was furious. the next marking period, i failed everything. just as furious, and she begged me to pass all classes next time, she would give me money. I got Cs and a B, next, and she was still pissed off this time, and she didnt give me the money! what bitches parents can be!!!!!

Don't let your grades affect your self-esteem

I've stopped telling myself that I'm smarter then people in my class, since I only learn what I actually find interesting, and most times all the studying before a test makes me mentally exhausted because of all the forced educating! :@

Don't let your grades affect your self-esteem

Hey Prince Rilian! I go to the first year at high school and a couple a weeks ago my teacher was threatening me with a remark because I was visiting a wiki page on my PC instead of her recommended recommendations. So I wasn't really paying attention to my teacher appearing and just kept on reading about that chemistry question and suddenly. Suddenly she was standing behind me saying "Hey! Do you want me to give you a remark because you're visiting stuff which isn't allowed". I remember I froze and my self-esteem pooped like Bloons - NinjaKiwi. And I was in a group which made it kinda worse, but still I remember arguing with her because it was related to school stuff. However, she's not my (nicely said) favorite teacher...
I'm promising you that next time she sneaks up upon me like that I'm gonna say "HEY BITCH, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS" No just joking. I guess I'm gonna sit there like frozen not say a word and keep on reading, and when she tries nudging me I'll just say "what is it". IS there a problem? And lastly, I'm gonna (if she threatens me I'll say Hey, do you think I care. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH, please, depart from me, your not beneficially influencing my time.

HELL YEAH!!!! Biggrin Biggrin Biggrin

Don't let your grades affect your self-esteem

I really needed to read this today. I just got my report card back and I have a C in Algebra I. C is not even a bad grade and I still feel like shit. I skipped a whole year's worth of math so I should be happy that I even passed

In elementary I had a B in math, and I struggled. Spent one hour ++ each day and B was my result. I was quite satisfied with my grade. Now however...
I go to first year in High School and first test arrives, still struggling I get a C. Now look at the contrasts, you skipped a whole year worth of math, and you rocked that test hard. Your a potential genius! Wink

I, unfortunately become worried because of my grades and maybe that's a good thing. I'm not sure but, it makes me at least keep control of stuff. I guess it doesn't bother me that much yet, still it can be quite tragic to feel shitty, when you actually dont care about a certain grade. :(

I agree with you on that SoulRiser. I was pointing out that with the very little effort he put into the math test, while I gave many hundred hours. His results were 100 times better then mine. That way his brain is E=mc2. Hehe jokiing! Biggrin

I would do that, but my parents would legitimately take away my computer, phone, TV, and drawing pad, make me do nothing but the hardest jobs they can find, and maybe put me in a mental hospital for a while. I'm not kidding.

Yeah, kinda understand. Mom would tie me up so she could beat me hard and then either try to drown me in a sink or suffocate me in a trash bag when I did bad. Thing is, everything I did she considerd bad, same punishment for A and F, so I just got the F. And besides, she is in jail now for abuseing me and goin after me with a gun and i live alone (I am only 14, but this is highland park detroit, practically anything slides here). So now I dont have to try in school. Evil
