RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Dropping out?

I haven't been going well at school as of late. By the time Year 11 comes around, I will most likely end up REPEATING a subject. Fuck. That.

So, I've been thinking about dropping out. It's been ten years since I started, it would be nice to finish it as an anniversary gift Razz

Can I drop out and do a GED to still make myself able to go into university? Are there GEDs in Australia? Am I fucking myself over by dropping out?

RE: Dropping out?

I got a GED and got into college a year ahead of my graduating class, and half a year ahead of the graduating class for 2009. You won't be fucking yourself over. Problem is, I don't know anything about GED equivalents for Australia.

RE: Dropping out?

You should be fine as long as you actually plan on going to college... If you can't get into regular college, do your gen ed courses at a community college, then just transfer. It's cheaper that way anyway... And once you have a degree, nobody gives a fuck about high school diplomas any more...

I have no idea if Australia has a GED though lol... Or community colleges for that matter.

RE: Dropping out?

Thanks for the info guys. I think a HSC (Higher School Certificate) may be the Australian equivalent to a GED.

I'm still not sure about dropping out, but at the same time I'm not sure I will be able to do two more years of this shit. I've gotten REALLY unmotivated these last six months, and do barely any work at all.

The thought of doing some test instead of doing two more years and still reaping all the rewards sounds too good to be true.

RE: Dropping out?

Soul, thanks for the info on Australia, but some of the stuff is outdated. For example, it's not HSC anymore, it's VCE.
Linki I never knew you were from Australia, I am from there too and I'm curious of getting another form of education. Are you thinking of getting into uni? What year are you in?

I'm in Year 10. I would very much like to get into uni. I'm currently trying to find out about if I can find an Australian version of a GED. Do you know of any? What's your situation?

Yeah I'm in Year 10 too and I would also like to get into uni. But I hate school like everyone else here and for all I know THERE IS NO OTHER WAY of getting into Uni without VCE (highschool), mature age entry (25+) or unless you're some genius drop out.

If you know any other way PM me as I'd like to know. Have you picked your Year 11 subjects?

No other way? Sheeeeet. Are you sure? Can't we do the HSC and skip 11 and 12?

I currently haven't picked my Year 11 subjects. I'll try to talk to the teachers at my school, see if they know of a way. Problem is they will try their best to persuade me not to drop out and won't give me an open minded opinion.

Yeah teachers will persuade you to stay - well, most. And there's no other way that I'm sure of, best way to find out is to probably contact the Universities. It's not as easy as America's system where you get the GED. I'm pretty sure you have to go through Year 11 and 12. Even if you get homeschooled you still have to take VCE examinations and there is a structure and rules that must be followed.

RE: Dropping out?

Lol no there is no GED in Australia. What state you from? If you're from NSW you can do a 1 year course at tafe that includes both year 11 and 12 and HSC, other states should have something similar. If not, you can do a diploma at TAFE for 1-2 years(depends on the course) and then, depending on the course, transfer to Uni, this should be possible in most states. Another route is doing the STAT test, for NSW though you would have to be at least 18, I dunno about other states. The STAT test is an aptitude test.

Trust me Australia is waaaaaay better than america when it comes to flexibility, we don't have to pay for uni(at least not for a while...) and there's heaps of alternatives., and tradies get paid heaps. But seriously dude don't drop out, especially if you're not sure what you're going to do. Only drop out if you're absolutely certain that you have a backup plan, whether you still want to go to uni or not.

PS At least finish year 10 if you haven't already, leaving school without passing year 10 is suicide, even the army requires that you finish year 10

RE: Dropping out?

Personally i don't like the whole GED bullshit. I rather just finish highschool. Yeah, i could just drop out next year and get a GED myself. But after looking at people i know who have done it... It just doesn't seem worth it. Honestly, colleges are going to accept people with diplomas first over those with a GED.

My opinion is, yes you are screwing yourself over. I stayed back into freshmen year because i skipped 3 months straight of school. I'm really determined to graduate early. I'm supposed to be class of '14 not '15. It feels like a failure on my part and i want to graduate with the people i'm supposed to.

GED, County College, Get into nearly any four year for the last two years of your Bachelor's, Save money, better than wasting life in high school and money for core classes in a four year.

RE: Dropping out?

Well personally, i wanna finish highschool because around here you're labeled as an idiot if you drop out. And I hear the GED testing is hard as fuck. Most people i know couldn't get through it. It's 4 tests at 2 hours each aparently. And I don't think I could do it. For me the better option is a diploma. And I don't plan on going to a regular college. I'm going to persue hairdressing, which is 2 years.

lol @ the person saying this...

Well, it doesn't look like Linki has to wait for teachers to dissuade him, because some of you are doing a pretty good job at it. Being a dropout myself, I'd give some advice but I don't know shit about how Australian schools work, nor do I want to know.

Yeah I guess you can do the STAT and Pi forms. And yeah in Australia I don't recommend dropping out since we don't have a GED unless you wanna become a tradie (which isn't that bad). Army soldier requires year 10, officer i think requires year 12. But I'm gonna finish highschool anyway since im kicking ass in it ^_^
