RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I never say the pledge anymore, just lip sync
My names Alan Sharpe and im 13 years old, not the stupid wannabe gangsters who MOST kids my age are, but anyway, im 13. I started questioning school last year in 6th grade when i forgot to stand for the pledge( talking with other kids) The teacher got all pissed, and talked to me in the hall. She asked me what our flag meant to me, and i gave the standard, "it symbolizes our freedom and our country" yada yada yada. I then had to write a letter to my parents explaining what i did and i had to turn it in the next day with their signature. In hinesight, i think instead of cooperating, i shouldve challenged her and told her i had rights. Since then, ive hated school on a whole new level. And until then i never realized what i was saying when i did the pledge. Glad i found this site.

Si jeni?
Good job with your realization. Forcing the pledge is just indoctrination. It should be a choice not a requirement. As a substitute I have had to real manuals and there is literally a law (in my area at least) mandating that the pledge be said every morning. GRANTED it also states that a student may choose to refuse to say the pledge. Though from my experience teachers never allowed this right. I would then tell the student they DID have the right under the law. That got me in trouble heh

Type in bellamy salute on wikipedia. This was our original flag salute. Notice it looks strangely familiar.

Welcome to SS drizzle.
You're not alone and trust me with a little digging there's alot of proof to suggest the pledge and freedom bullshit they preach to you is garbage.

You don't actually need to stand or lip sync at all, they have no legal basis to force you to (but as we all know, that doesn't usually stop them from being intimidating anyway)...

RE: I never say the pledge anymore, just lip sync
I refused to say the pledge in 6th grade, and my parents supported me. But texas law requires that students stand during it, though they don't have to say it.

What's pledge, like an anthem or something?

I don't even lip sync anymore, just kind of stand there, in fact, i don't think anyone says the pledge in my class anymore
