RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Well, this is new. Everything Gifty_Chung said is true, though. Online school might be easier to convince your mom about. It's not unschooling, but maybe it's better than nothing...

Crap, forgot you're in Australia for a minute there. xD
No idea if online schooling is available there or how it works. Might be worth looking into, though.

Yeah, probably not gonna happen. My mom HATES the internet. She thinks I spend too much time on the computer already.

She hates the internets eh? Well tell her some people make $20k per month from websites (actually some people make a lot more than that). Maybe that'll change her tune.

I brought up the idea of online school, and she says that no online high school exists. I know she's wrong, I actually know someone who did it last year. She doesn't believe me.

She doesn't sound very convince-able. :(

She isn't. She also keeps asking what I'm doing every 5 or so minutes.

That would drive me literally insane...

Headphones help. She stopped doing that, she doesn't do it all the time, thankfully.

I want to unschool, but my mom probably won't like the idea at all.
What about this? Have the tutor for now...because really, you're not going to get her to agree to unschool in one leap and getting over the 'you can only learn at school' hurdle is ... well, half the battle is won, if you'll excuse the horribly mixed metaphor. During the holidays, unschool yourself...one condition though, you have to keep a log of what you've done and what you've learnt from it and note what you've learnt from the tutor too. Present the two logs to your mum at the close of every holiday. I guarantee you've learnt something, it's just a matter of what subjects. If you truly didn't learn, it's review of learnt material, right?
For example:
Video games? Well, that's computer skills.
Things like the Papa's series? Well, that's time-management and maths.
Playing with friends? Well, that's social skills or PSHE.
Writing your own story? Well, that's English Literature. Proofreading is English Language.
You had biscuits and shared them with your friends? Well, that's division/Maths.
If I seem rude to you, please call me on it gently.
One thing (among many others) school couldn't teach you.
