RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Where were you?

During 9/11?

I was seven at the time. I remember I was in my second grade teacher's class and a the phone rings. My teachers answers it and hangs up. She tells us we're getting out early. Since school just started like forty-five minutes ago, we all cheered.

Next thing I can remember was my mom walking me home. I asked her what happened and she told me some buildings were attacked. I thought she was talking about the ones in our city so I tried to look at the city skyline for smoke and flames but found nothing. It was until I actually got inside where I realized the truth.

Turns out it was in New York. They were covering the North Tower of the World Trade Center on fire. I took a nap a few minutes later and missed the other attacks. I woke up a few hours later and watched the news up until the night.

During Hurricane Katrina?

I was eleven at the time and I remember hearing all these reports on TV saying how bad this storm would be and where it was going to hit. When it actually hit I watched TV coverage of it.

During the beginnings of the Financial Crisis?

I was in some diner. I was thirteen at the time. I remember watching the news about how stocks took a nose dive. I didn't pay any attention to it until I heard that businesses were going bankrupt and people were being laid off.

During the Presidential Inauguration?

We watched the while thing in my 9th grade year. We wacthed the televised screening of during the morning periods.

Previously known as Derchin.

RE: Where were you?

9/11: I was in second grade, I had a dentist appointment that day so I was already a few hours late, It happened not long after I got to school. i remember the teacher saying something about planes hitting some building but nobody really gave a damn cause we got out of school early.

All the others: Just some event I watched on the TV that I really didn't give two fucks about.

RE: Where were you?

9/11

I was in 7th Grade. I was in Spanish class and some kids were spreading what they heard from the outside. Our school didn't want the kids getting nervous so they didn't tell us anything (don't get me started on that). One kid said someone crashed a truck into a twin tower and he said it'd be cool if he did it because he'd be remembered forever (fucking dick).

I got home and remember watching the towers fall and feeling really pissed and helpless.

Hurricane Katrina

I was in highschool. Not sure which level. I didn't hear much about it other than donations were being taken at school. I didn't even see anything on TV about it.

Beginnings of the Financial Crisis

College. I remember we were about to buy a beach house but my dads business went in the gutter and we almost lost our actual house. Luckily my parents clung to it and his business picked up a little steam. It is still slow though.

Presidential Inauguration

In my friends basement. All liberals cheering Obama's victory. I was so happy. Looking back I see how ignorant I was but I can't blame myself for that back then. At least I realized how silly I was.

RE: Where were you?

I was in 8th grade. None of us actually knew what was going until the end of the day. The school went big brother and ordered the teachers to keep all TV's and radios off so we wouldn't know. Even though we were less than 30 miles from Manhattan and almost a third of the students were pulled from class that day.

RE: Where were you?

9/11: Had just come downstairs from getting dressed or some shit (I was like, 4 at the time) and saw my mom watching the TV with the towers burning on them. We just kinda stood there and watched for a long time.

The rest, I don't remember.

RE: Where were you?

During 9/11?

Was 12 and in school when it happened and I remembered the teachers being really angry while students made jokes about it(didn't think it was a serious deal).

During Hurricane Katrina?

Was at home on the computer and remembered my mother trying to make it sound all big while I was playing deus ex.

During the beginnings of the Financial Crisis?

I was just graduating when I heard about it and figured it would let up(poor hopeful me).

During the Presidential Inauguration?

In texas when my dad and the rest of the other dumbass black people though having a nigger president who screamed hope and change would save them and things would improve. Showed how pathetic people could really be as they clung to hope til the cold bitter end.

Also in before some moral fag bawls about us.
