RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Misled Youth Network event in NYC

This was posted on the Misled Youth forums:

view full details

This is the big one:
We want to organize this really big event in about three months
Below is a rough draft of the text for a flyer for an event we’ve been brainstorming about. We're hoping that it will happen by mid-february. A lot of preparation will be necessary before it actually happens, but the first step is to present the idea to some of our allies and get feedback. We may be able to hold the event in a warehouse space in long island city. Some of the things we need to do to prepare are:
- find performers and artists to participate
- [we can probably get choking victim/leftover crack, the stockyard stoics, and maybe some more punk bands, fire performers if we’re lucky, some DJ’s who spin old skool reggae, a bunch of MC’s and poets from Urban Word, the Hip Hop Project, Blackout Arts Collective, and possible more. One time I gave a zine to Immortal Technique but that doesn’t mean much, huh?]
- do a lot more outreach, and specifically make contacts with young people representing the many youth cultures we’re hoping to include
- create and distribute flyers (we’re thinking of making 11x17 color trifold poster/flyers that show the homepage of our website, misled-youth.org on the inside
- we’ll also need a sound system and help with obtaining and preparing food.

So please, please let us know what you think, and get in touch if you’d like to get involved in any way!!!
THE MISLED YOUTH NETWORK PRESENTS…
THE FIRST EVER ALL - CITY YOUTH CULTURE EXTRAVAGANZA!!!
LIVE PERFORMANCES by various bands, MC’s, poets, and dancers
EXHIBITION OF ARTWORK representing a variety of styles and mediums including graffiti, collage, comic book illustration, and more
FRESH FOOD for all tastes
The Misled Youth Network was created to tackle issues that young people of all backgrounds face including incarceration / institutionalization, drug abuse, mental illness, disunity, family problems, and an alienating education system. We believe that much of the potential that we as youth have to counter these problems lies in our different youth cultures -- hip hop, punk rock, skater, and so many more. The first step we need to take in order to understand and learn from each other is to get to know each other. So whether you're into MCing, playing music, making zines, creating graphic novels, fire breathing, simply curious or just fed up, come out and share your skills and enjoy the art and performances.
A $5-10 donation is requested to benefit the Misled Youth Network. Receive a $3 discount if you bring a mix tape/CD, zine, or other gift to share with someone who has never been exposed to the particular art form. All ages welcome.
More local things to get involved in coming up…
