RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

hi there

school isn't worth stressing about - most of the stuff they teach you you will never need to know again.

just work hard enough to pass - unless you can talk your parents into letting you try one of the alternatives

good luck Smile

Welcome! School is so boring I could die too, and I'm also kind of scared about my future now. I have so much wasted developmental time to make up for, now that I've had brighter experiences than the emptiness of school (at an interesting job.)

But I have plans. Better instruction, learning, and evalution methods need to be developed, and put into practice. That's basically what I am trying to do for a career.

I don't know anything about Norwegian schools, but I'm interested in learning because this is a global problem. School is especially inadequate for some students, especially the ones that are bored. A great paper that documents the views of some bored students is http://www.geniusdenied.com/articles/....

SoulRiser Wrote:school isn't worth stressing about - most of the stuff they teach you you will never need to know again.

Well... active boredom is intrinsically stressful. I've faced that lately in college more than earlier in school, because then I was almost totally mentally disengaged. And I regret that. But if you want an active mind and to use your time well, it can be distressing to be in boring situations. In particular, one theory of situational boredom is that it's caused by "attentional constraints." For example you usually have to pay some attention in class and that means you're not as free to do or think of something interesting.

Basically I believe that it's very important to utilize the school years effectively, which school can impede. So it's hard not to stress over that...
but instead of stressing, focus on what can be done on your own. And share your specific complaints here.

Yea, I'm apparently so good at necromancy that I can get other people to think this is a recent post and they just somehow haven't seen it on the "new posts" section of the site for some weird reason.

We have no room service. And you must bring your own mattress. Water to your room must be manually pumped. There is no window(though if requested we shall use your body to bash out a portion of the brick wall to let in sunlight).

We do hope you enjoy your stay!

Schools so boring i could die

Speaking of missing users, I wonder what happened to Rebelnerd. His last post said that he was in China, without explanation. That was in mid-2011. His last visit was March 2012. I wonder how he got sent there in the first place, and what happened to him. Hope he made it back home, wherever that is.

Maybe we should start SS-MUU (School-Survival: Missing User Unit) and find out what happened.

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

Could theoretically be done if Soul knows the IPs (which I think she does), but those are likely out-of-date or possibly re-assigned. I'm not sure how IPs work, though they often change. Would give us a rough location though.

Some of the mysteriously missing users have e-mails, but they may no longer be in use anyway. Some have defected to DnE.

Well, we could find her if we went to her ISP. While IP's are reused, most ISP's keep track of who used it and when. Of course not sure if that's still used(was in a Yahoo Answers question, so it could have been a while ago), but most likely that would not work. Still The SS-MUU (say that outloud...lol), is an intersting idea.

I wonder how the IP thing would work with me We be using wifi(signal enhanced with a device that amplifies wifi signal). We got the account info from another family that has the service of the company that provides said wifi, so we can log in with it for internet access. Its not that bad either(Ive seen it hit 4-5Mbs download speed though average is about 1Mbs).

Course the IP always seems to change(we do have to sign in every hour or so, which isnt really a big deal). Only down side is that only 3 devices(on 1 account) can connect to wifi modem thing. And I think the modem thing is mainly solar powered so on less sunny days the connection seems a bit more weaker and less stable.

I wonder if this is the SS Rebelnerd:
http://www.rebelnerdeducation.com/#!

If that is Rebelnerd, I wonder why he never came back, and how he got out of China.
