RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Valve encouraging piracy with Half-Life

I think Valve's new idea of forcing everyone to connect to the internet to play Half-Life 2, even on a LAN, is only going to indirectly make more people familiar with the notion of a crack.

I bought the old Half-Life 1 when it came out, and I haven't really played it online much, but a while back I actually downloaded the steam update, and realised i couldn't play on LANs anymore. So what did I do? Used the cracked version instead, naturally!

What do you guys think? Would you go online to play singleplayer? (I heard that if you update the game you'd have to go online to play singleplayer too). Or would you just get a crack?

Piracy

Honestly, I'd encourage piracy over that madness any day. See, here's how I see it...

Often, these big ol' companies are always devising new ways to combat copies of their products from floating, but in truth, introducing new protections just makes hackers more eager to crack it. If a person downloads something, it's usually for very limited purposes and even more rarely distributed, most people just wanna download one song/game and leave it alone, play it abit, and try it. If they like it, they'll probably buy it. Pursuing those who download a few copies of something and suing their asses off just creates an air of disgust, and then will duplicate the songs, games, programs out of spite. Metallica makes a really good example. Smilewinkgrin

But, that's my view of that.

yeah, agreed there. also i think if they made games cheaper more people would buy them as well. if they're this expensive it makes people more careful as to what games they get, and especially makes them want to try it out first.

Yep. screw the capitalists for taking advantage of the people. Every copy protection is but a new training exercise for our good ol' crackers. Long live the anarchists!

Yes, but then again if you spent millions of dollars working on a game would you rather have it floating around on the internet unchecked? Profits profits profits! And although they're constantly coming up with new ideas to stop the piracy, it will exist. The root of this problem: money. Big companies want money, they try to force you to buy it. People don't want to spend money, they find cracked versions.

You know. You can crack the software, and you can hurt the companies. I don't care about that.

But put yourself in this scenario: You just made a game, and this was one of the hardest games you have had to make. Next thing you know, you see someone take it, without even acknowleding that you did it. That's software piracy.

yeah, pretending something is yours when it isn't, is morally wrong. and pirate syndicates that re-sell copies of games are also wrong.
