RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Free-Speech Yuppies

So, recently myspace made a few new changes to their service, to protect children. It's basically making an age gap so pedofiles can't reach children that easy.

People are currently bitching about that, because it's "Ageist".

WHO GIVES A FUCK?

It's MySpace's service. They can do whatever the fuck they want with it. They can make as big a gap as they want, and you can't do shit about it! Why? Because it's MySpace's g'damn servers. They paid for it, they bought it, they constructed the entire thing. You are their bitch!

I don't get where this "Freedom of Speech" bullshit comes in either. That only applies to stuff that isn't owned by the United States. A Church doesn't have to let someone preach whatever they consider evil in their building, and MySpace doesn't have to make it so you can talk to your eighteen year old friends.

They are a service, and you are the customer. You get stuff for free, so be happy. If you don't like what you're getting, go to a new service. JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP!

you're missing the point. it's not just about the laws they make, it's about the attitude behind them. they make one anti-teen law, the set a precedent that leads to thousands. soon, there won't BE another service to go to.

Where?
Where did I mention the world law?

There is now law involved in this. MySpace is a service, and can abide by, or refuse to abide by any law they like. Google's denied the Government, Microsoft's denied the Government, and MySpace can too, but they don't have to.

just because a few idiots put information on myspace that could draw pedophiles doesn't mean that all young people's free speech rights should be controlled. what we need to do is teach them about the danger, not just try to stop it from happening, because it's not fair to people who are responsable, and it almost certainly won't work. i mean come on people, when they say "laws to keep pedophiles away from kids" what they really mean most of the time are age restrictions. that means either young kids won't be allowed to use these communication services, or adults won't be able to talk to kids even if they, like the vast majority, are not pedophiles. the number predators online is so grossly exaggerated, the media just wants to scare people.

But here's the thing, and it's the same point I've been making in my whole rant.

IT IS NOT YOUR CHOICE.

MySpace is owned by News Corporation. They have complete control over what laws they choose to abide by, and do not choose to abide by. They have enough lawyers to make every supreme court justice turn into anarchists, if they really felt like it. MySpace chose to put those restrictions in place, and they, as the provider, have the unchanging right, to do so.

You, as the customer, can either use, or refuse the service.

End of story.

That's a moral interpretation that not everyone agrees with. Myspace is doing what they obviously feel is necessary, or, what they SHOULD do. You can't impose your own morality on someone else. If you really don't like what they're doing then create your own service and market it.

look, i know they can do whatever they want. it's not myspace specifically that i'm criticizing, it's the whole attitude of people today that teens can't be trusted and need to be "protected" even if that interferes with their freedom of speech. myapce can make whatever rules they want, but i'm saying that we need to be careful or this discriminatory idea will take over the whole internet.

Yes, Myspace can do whatever the hell it wants with its service and if you don't like it you can leave. That's one side of the story.

But then there's the fact that lots of kids use Myspace as the place to talk to their online friends. Sure, they could just switch to another service, but they'd have to get all their friends to switch too, and it wouldn't be the same. Or they could lie about their age and stay.

And sure enough, even if Myspace restricts people based on age, those people will always find ways to keep in touch with their friends. Maybe even better ways. Once again, that's just one side of the story. Myspace's method of keeping pedophiles further away from kids is a quick and dirty fix, not very likely to work, and probably causing more frustration than benefits. Of course, they did it so that they'd look better to the media.

Notice how I didn't even mention anything to do with being 'ageist' Razz

Then again, how would people react if Myspace started to restrict it's service based on a person's race or religion?

Then people would probably yell at them SoulRiser.
Yes, people treat Ageism differently then Racism and Xenophobia. There, you won, happy? Keep in mind, Age changes. Race doesn't, and religion doesn't change often either.

The end of the story is, alot of kids use MySpace, and they agreed to the Terms of Service. When you sign that contract, you've signed the contract, you've sealed the fate, and if you didn't read it, you've screwed yourself over. If it's your only place to talk to your online friends, then you have problems, in which case, whose fault is it?

MySpace's method of keeping pedofiles away works for them, and that's all we need to know. It may be ageist, but that's the way life is. It used to be that children developed something called, "A Coping Mechanism". Now people let children whine and complain, and bitch about this, and bitch about that, how life's unfair, and things aren't the way they should be. That's life, and people have to start dealing with that fact.

This generation is quickly growing to be the first generation, without the means to deal with any emotional endeavour. If MySpace existed 50 years ago, and restricted people from talking to each other like MySpace is doing now, people wouldn't really care. Now, everyone's in an uproar on how a 14 year old, can't talk to their 40 year old friend. If your buddy is that old, you should have alternate means to contact them. If you don't, that's your loss, and it's not the fault of MySpace.

Merely bitching about other peoples attitudes isn't going to get anything done. Living through example will. You can fear the consequences of what Myspace is doing all you want, the truth of the matter is, however, that unless you stand up and do something other than complain, it will actually happen.

that's a completely different issue, we were talking about whether or not it should happen not what should be done about it.

It's not a completely differant issue because its part of the problem. People see what they think is an injustice and automatically instead of actually doing something about it, they merely talk. Talk goes no where. Alot of the time it's just emotionally charged, self righteous bullshit. It collects in the streets, where it causes even more problems until someone is brave and fed up enough to do something about it.

What I'm trying to say behind the poety above is this: You can talk all you want about whether or not it should happen, but the fact is that until you actually go and do something to rectify the problem, its just going to build up. Which will in turn eventually make your fear of wide spread internet ageism a reality.
