RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Which is fine, even good, if it's people that already live in mansions and have yachts, but we are getting stuck with shittier and shittier movies now. Movie companies don't want to take the risk of edgy movies because they might lose money, and piracy is one of the main reasons of that. Because of movie piracy we're getting stuck with more and more crappy sequels and shitty M. Night Shyamalan movies.
Bullshit.
The reason you get shitter games and movies is because they are cheaper to make and plenty of people still eat that shit up.
Piracy or not they would have to make better games and movies if people stopped eating that shit they throw out nowadays.
russian movies from back in the day were better than the crap I see.
Suppose a person spends 5 years writing a really, really goodass book. Then some people go and copy the book and sell it for pennies on the dollar.
Who in fucks name would write books unless they don't do it for a living (in which case books are crappier)
I support enforcing anti-piracy laws to a minor, unobtrusive extent. Just nab the people who download shittons of terabytes of new-release movies and new-release PC games and shit. Otherwise leave us the fuck alone.

Anyway, I'm PRO-PIRACY. I even have my own Piratebay clothing. You can't stop us from sharing shit online. It's my life. I spend over $1000 on fucking games and shit, what do you expect when it's like $80 a game, we're not all rich cunts. I buy games that are really good, download the rest.
Eg. I bought RAGE because I like idSoftware.
Eg2. I downloaded Starcraft II, liked it, so I bought it.
Eg3. I pay every two fucking months for WoW.
Eg4. I don't buy FIFA, because every year its the same fucking EA shit.

This article came out about the time when SOPA/PIPA were big news. I know this is an old thread, but I do like the article and I agree. If people like something, they willl buy it. Sometimes a demo isn't enough, if its crap, why waste money? No need to.

Thanks for the diploma… can I have my childhood back?

For anyone who remembers me going on an archive binge: Thank you all. I know I ended it being a drama queen, I don't really agree with the ideology anymore, and I'm really not the same person I was (I went through a neopagan phase!) but still this site was the first online community I was in. Interestingly, when it comes to FanFic, only a few organizations/companies/whatevers actually have issues with it. Most (the smart ones) believe it fosters creativity. Others (the dumb ones) just don't really care.

There's 'snarky le internet' types who watch Retsupurae religiously and hate TV Tropes with a passion because some of the community and anime pages are bad (at least Troper Tales was excised after it got the spotlight) who also dislike fanfiction because most of it is apparently crap, or at least sub-average. And a good majority is, although I wouldn't say it's quite up to 90% like in the classical interpretation of Sturgeon's Law. The rest of the stuff that's good, though, is damn good for it.
Also, AFAIK it's mostly legal. One disclaimer at the start of a story probably covers you, if there's nothing else. People who bitch about how it isn't legal are probably Retsupurae fans.
And piracy? SOPA/PIPA/neoSOPA-whatever is shit. Because the MPAA, RIAA and patron corporations need more power to shit on us. Piracy isn't theft in the sense of physical property, but it does signify in a sense a theft of intellectual property, and therefore if people pirate a product and don't decide to buy it, that's a theft of a little bit of money. This affects independent works far worse than products of major corporations, so keep that in mind. People have the right to make money off of their innovations and products

I have a lot more
The Operating systems i pirated:
Windows 98 (for my VM)
Windows XP (for my VM as well)

I've lost count. I'm pretty much an experienced pirate now(or at least not like those stupid fools who can't figure out the difference between a rar and iso(or what .iso format even is. And not like those who don't seem to have any of the basic tools)
Personally, though, I'm on a quest to buy most of the stuff I pirated that I enjoy a lot. I've got most of the games already (Steam makes that easy)... now it's a bitch to find the music. I don't really want CD's... nor do I want to pay for shipping, nor do I want to pay the ridiculous local prices per CD. Nor do I want to give any money whatsoever to Apple for their Itunes thing. Soooo... yeah. I wish all bands would put a donation button on their website... that'd solve everything.

Note that steam only gives you a license to play. The reason they can make it so cheap at times is probably because steam contrils the games you have, thus they are uber DRM. And there is no physical copies or shipping/handling involved.
I really don't know about music, but I do have a problem when people bootleg video games, books, and movies. Not all creators are rich, let's say that you are a small indie game developer, you create a really great game it costs $20 and you can get 1,000,000 copies sold and get $20,000,000 off of it, but we are in a free-for-all piracy world and many people know how to pirate games. the steal 90% of your profit (which is 18,000,000 and leave you with only $2 million
Lets not forget free-for-all piracy still wouldn't mean high levels of piracy. Piracy requires a certain degree of intelligence that many people seem to lack if I rely on comments posted on sites like piratebay(where almost every other comment is "HOW I OPEN ISO?!" or "WHAT I DO WITH ALL THIS RAR?!" or "HALP I DONT KNOW TO INSTALL". I mean...the torrent description tells you what to do, the read-me tells you what to do, and there is some common sense involved)
I'm all for piracy as long as the pirate isn't a capitalist scumbag who just makes copies to sell. Personal private use is fine by me.
I also don't generally pirate from indie developers(if I did, I'd probably buy the game later on if I liked it. Think of it as an unrestricted demo)
And pirating old games keeps them alive. Some games are just hard to find in physical copies that are good(since "virtual" doesn't have any real quality issues, it shouldn't be a problem)
I know someone who has bootlegged a record amount of DVDs. He has bootlegged all the Alien Movies, all the predator movies, and generally all the 80's and 90's classics some from the 2000s (Friday the 13, lawnmower man, the last samurai etc.)
My pirate list:
Minecraft (I bought it later to play on servers)
Assorted Dreamcast Games
Assorted 3DO Games
FL Studio 10
Sony Vegas 11
Mega Man X5
Mega Man X6
Mega Man X8
Super Meat Boy
Terraria
SimCity 2000
Duke Nukem 3D
Windows 3.1 (DOSBox)
DOOM
DOOM 2
Final DOOM
Heretic
Hexen
Strife
Windows 95 (DOSBox) (Deleted)
SimLife
Wolfenstien 3D
18 Wheels of Steel: American Long Haul (Deleted)
Almost everything on my YouTube music playlist
Jazz Jackrabbit
Rise of the Triad
SimCopter
RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum
I will also pirate Windows 98 Second Edition in the near future for a legacy laptop that has Windows XP on it but it can barely run Windows XP.
