RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

How I get ideas

The best ideas come to me showering or lying in bed. If I'm lying in bed I let the thought mull for a while then I write it down. For fun, let's see what I wrote down last night:

Quote:Logic v Reason (logic from traditional axioms)

All men are islands, the ocean floor connects us all

Biology, ecology, game of life, knowledge in a vacuum, no history, fourier transform

Evil Che - great comy now fuel for capitalism

David Hume is a jerk
-summoned from grave
-doesn't believe he's summoned "on miracles"

Tyranny of Justice - punishment is revenge
rehab not rehurt

Equality for all! Liberty for none.

aesthetics as morality eg "ewww, guys kissing"

"myth of child abuse" -> schools
-emotional, psychological harm bt people say it's rebellion and teenage angst
-wounds are self appearing

Incest is best "universal" taboo

A disbelief is still a belief disbelief.
athiests also have burden of proof
->atheism as religion
-science breaching sep of church+state

As you see a lot is philosophy and a bit random. So how do you get ideas?

These are the ones that I happened to think about most lately. I won't elaborate much because I'm tired but the rehab point especially. I mean within the realm of rehabilitation you have to face consequences...jailtime. But when it focues on punishment without rehabilitation...it seems to abuse usage of consequence. Or it doesn't follow through with it afterwards. Anyways...I don't know. I just remember having a real hard time sending my step-dad to jail when I wanted him to get the help he needed.

As far as the incest being the best universal tool...yeah, that's been on my mind lately because I have to modernize the Scarlet Letter for english and nothing seems to get a universal reaction anymore except for child sex offenders. Sexual predator listing, probation...all that.

I get ideas when I'm in bed mostly. It's probably half the reason behind my insomnia. Who can puts their mind to rest and get a good night's sleep when their thought process is focused on how many things are wrong in the world (I may or may not be OCD, my therapist is closing in on that diagnosis). I don't usually write them down...but I don't know. I have a lot of random thoughts run through my head all the time.

Let's do the time warp again!

I'll explain what I was thinking.

Quote:Logic v Reason (logic from traditional axioms)
I was thinking about doing an essay for school about the difference between pure logic and what we call reason, which is logically determining things from irrational traditional axioms. The old philosophers would start with questions like "What is justice" and go from there. But they only chose justice because it's considered good without proving that it's good.

Quote:All men are islands, the ocean floor connects us all
Everybody has their own perspective and we are forever bound to only experiencing us. But we do have connections to everything, we just can't see it right away.

Quote:Biology, ecology, game of life, knowledge in a vacuum, no history, fourier transform
It relates to my post about knowledge in a vacuum. I was thinking about the game of life because it can be used to show the interconnectedness of everything. You can teach programming, math, evolution, biology, psychology, and philosophy with it.

Quote:Evil Che - great comy now fuel for capitalism
Pretty self evident. Che was called the Butcher of Cabana for executing hundreds of "traitors"

Quote:David Hume is a jerk
-summoned from grave
-doesn't believe he's summoned "on miracles"
David Hume's extreme but logical skepticism completely destroyed many philosophies, which is a good thing. He destroyed the basis for both religion and (deductive) science. I was thinking about writing a story about someone summoning a bunch of old philosophers from the grave. I would have David Hume not believe in his being summoned because of the reasons he outlined in his Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding.

Quote:Tyranny of Justice - punishment is revenge
rehab not rehurt
For some reason I've never understood justice. What we call justice is just impersonal revenge. You kill someone, you go to jail because you deserve it. How do they deserve it? Through some sort of moral calculus? People who do bad things should be helped not just stuck in prison.

Quote:Equality for all! Liberty for none.
You can have both equality and liberty but only if equality isn't law. By forcing people to treat people equally you take away liberty. So you can only have liberty and equality or just equality.

Quote:aesthetics as morality eg "ewww, guys kissing"
Most males at my school take the opinion that the only homosexual behaviour good is lesbianisn, as long as both are hot. We were talking about gay marriage in class last year and I supported it. The kid behind me said, "You want to see guys kissing?". Another girl defended herself saying that we shouldn't call it marriage because it's only for a man and a woman. She wanted to call gay marriage 'bondage'. Her argument included multiple references to god and church.

Quote:"myth of child abuse" -> schools
-emotional, psychological harm but people say it's rebellion and teenage angst
-wounds are self appearing
I was reading something about "The Myth of Child Abuse". It was mass self-delusion by doctors and psychologists that believed that "somehow" children were getting bruises out of nowhere. I think it's obvious what it was. This relates to anti-school because people delude themself that school is a necessary part of life and that it helps people. They see the complaining and angst and say, oh it's just a phase.

Quote:Incest is best "universal" taboo
Just reminding myself to write something about why incest is not bad.

Quote:A disbelief is still a belief disbelief.
athiests also have burden of proof
->atheism as religion
-science breaching sep of church+state
Some atheists claim atheism is an absence of belief. That's wrong because they are making a claim and so they have the burden of proof to disprove god not just disprove other's arguments for the existence of god. So I was thinking if the god of atheism, science, could be considered a religion. I have seen some scientific work that would suggest that some do consider science the ultimate.
