RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

ARGH!!

Ok, heres my problem, I live in WA state, and I looked up the requirments for getting my GED, it said in my case, since I'm 16 years old, I had to do some things to make sure I'm mature enough to get it...I don't know why, but I'm VERY mature for my age. Anyways, one of the things I had to do was talk to some guy, a counsler I believe, so he can make sure I know what I'm getting myself into...Anyways, I set up a meeting, and my mom, step-dad and I went to see him, ( I have my parents support on this)...For the first 30min all he said what are my plans for the future, where I'm gonna work etc etc...Which to be honest I don't know, I just need to get out of school because I has made my life a living hell, has depressed me even to the point of thinking of suicide (my parents don't know about that part)...anyways, don't wanna make this too long =].

I just needed to know he can choose whether I can take it or not, I told him I absolutely HATE school, and if I don't get my GED, well, I might just say fuck it and be done, but it seems he didnt even listen to me, he just started ranting about how I will never be anything in life if I don't stay in school, (he sounded so bored and half-alive while speaking with me), in the end I was just like..uhhhhhh...ok??? well basicly he told me to wait in school a bit, which has totally sucked big time, I'm gonna call him to make another meeting, but I honestly have no idea what to say, everything I told him in the first meeting he just countered by saying "try harder", and "its not really that bad, comon'", but it's obvious he doesnt understand me, or my situiation, and I doubt he knows whats best for me...I just needed to know if he has the right to deny me getting it? Because he said he has never given the OK on getting a GED to a 16 year old person...But I just can't stand being in school anymore, I don't know how much longer I can take it, and the worste part is my parents gave in to his f****ing speech and now are kinda on his side...I mean, we didnt really even get a chance to talk, and the guy also kinda freaks me out which makes it that much harder to talk to him... well anyways, if you guys have any advice on how to handle this, I would GREATLY appreciate it...IF there's no way around it..Well I guess I'm f****ed... None

You might try this link http://apps.leg.wa.gov./WAC/default.aspx...180-96-045

You said WA state right? this link is from WA state board of ed.
The link above will allow to to peruse through all the statutes concerning GED "approval"
I only looked briefly through the statutes, so don't hang your hat on it, but my understanding was that you needed 2 out of the 6 requirements, one of which is that your parent(s)/guardians agreed it was in your best interest. Also pay particular attention to number 1 on the list as you have stated that is the case for you.

I was glad to hear your parents were behind you and I think if you talk to them you can keep them from totally swaying in the counselor's direction. Tell your parents that they know you better than he/she does which is why they were behind you in the first place.

I hope I was of some help. But seriously both you and your parents should read the statutes, as your parents might get a little pissed off at WA state's effort to usurp their rights too. WA educational dept. has some horrendous ideas.

Even if I wanted to stick around and finish it, I've failed a few classes in 9th grade, and all of 10th....I mean, I'm pretty much already screwed, I don't know why the guy won't just let me get my GED, it's the best route for me. I'm gonna set up another meeting with..Wish me luck heh Crossfingers

does it have to be THAT particular counselor that you talk to? it sounds to me like he needs some severe improvement in his listening ability. i'd vote for go see a different one Razz

Yes it has to be THAT one, unfortunatly...i live in kind of a small town and hes the only one, but i dont think hes a counsler, im not sure what he is exactly, just that hes a princapal at the "flunky" school as he calls it, im not sure why i need to talk to him, i know i just do. but i havnt been able to make another meeting with him to get my GED, ive sent him many emails, which he hasnt replied, and he NEVER answers his phone, which means i have to endure more school... None i think he may be ignoring me, because he told me to wait in school for another month, but i just cant do it anymore...and im positive he checks his email, i mean, who the hell doesnt everyday?

Oh, i forgot to ask, does he have the right to tell me "no, you cant get your GED so suck it up."???? because i have a feeling he will..like i said he said hes never given the approval to a 16 year old.

is there any good alternatives to a highschool? i mean, where i dont have to deal with classmates and stuff, im very anti-social...only one i can think of is like some online classes, but ive heard they cost a lot, and my mom probly wont trust me to actually do work online, since i like surfing the web and playing games and stuff.

Re: ARGH!!

I have a feeling that he won't be giving you the go ahead for you to get your GED anytime soon. My best advice for you would be to get a job if you don't have one already. Work the maximum amount of hours you can, and just chill in school until you either become old enough to get your GED on your own, or the school decides you're a burden and throws you out. That way when you leave, you will at least have work experiance to fall back on. And trust me two years gives you alot of work experiance if you do it right. I seriously wish that I had gotten my GED, the only reason I graduated was because a friend from work, who I later became best friends with overheard me talking about it. Apparently I scared the shit out of her. Biggrin

But anyway, only you know what you want in life at this moment. If you truly don't want to go to school, and are putting no effort into it, than you shouldn't be forced to waste your time there. Just try to explain that to your parents. And make sure to let them know that a GED is not a death sentence. You can still wind up going to college if you go to a community (junior) college first.

So just go to the library and read instead of going to class. If they ban you from the library bring your own books to school and read those in class. Eventually they will get fed up.

And what do you mean she made you choose to go back to Denver with your dad? Are they divorced? Because what that sounds like to me is that she threatened to "disown" you sorta by sending you to your dads then absolving herself of all responsibility for you. Which is pretty shitty if you ask me.

But seriously. I still don't trust many people about anything the first time they tell me. With the possible exception of Soul and other people here, because I've experienced it and know it's true.
