Evil? Nah. I think Stalin was far worse.
Hitler was an idealist gone radical(like Guevera or Mao), and the Nazi party was where he found his dreams. I wouldnt go so far to call him "evil" because he wasnt doing the things he did for personal pleasure but because he was pretty high on the idea of the Aryan race and ultranationalism.
Thanks to Germany's treatment by the allied powers after world war one, Hitler pretty much had millions of poor, sad and desperate Germans to preach his radical beliefs to. If you bring a hundred despairing people together and give them an energetic and charismatic speech full of hope and emotions, they will pretty much consider you a god...
Hitler's support was always a bit shaky since not every German sided with him, or only sided for their own benefit rather than real care for the ideals. However, he had enough worshippers in high official positions to pretty much loyally run the nation with him.
